Fuel pump fails

I have a 1989 with 2.9 L V6. I have replaced the fuel pump many many times and I really don't understand why it keeps failing I've changed the filer and the lines. I have removed to failed pump and bench tested it and it just won't work. Any ideas. Maybe I need a new tank? Thanks

What is the brand you are using as a replacement for the stock motorcraft pump?


There are more than a few people who have to replace 3rd party brand pumps within first year, and a few times, under warranty but still a pain to replace every time.

Use a volt meter and test the voltage at the battery after engine has warmed up.
After initial recharge you should see under 14volts at the battery at idle
Then raise RPMs to 2,000 while watching voltage, should stay under 14volts.
If not the voltage regulator is bad and the higher voltage can burn out fuel pumps over time.
It will also shorten battery life.

Hopefully you aren't using Airtex brand fuel pumps. They are garbage and usually don't last very long at all.

I'm using Precision OE brand pumps.
Now that you mentioned the battery, I have had issues with it staying charged as well. I will check the voltage regulator.

Also, what are your fill-up habits? How low do you run the tank? The fuel cools the pump, if you run it a while, get the tank good and hot, let the fuel get down past 1/8th you can induce a condition called "thermal shock" which is basically taking the hot pump and dousing it in cold gas, which can break things.
