need help
my 98 ranger with the vulcan 3.0 has a lean problem
it is holding presure 68psi idling but is throwing a lean code and is bleeding off to zero in about 1.5 min
the resouce we use at my work (all data) says that 68psi is perfect
i did notice the other day though that the schrader that you check pressure at was leaking, now could that cause a lean code and how tight should it be or were could i get a replacement because i heard the seals are different from normal valves :icon_confused:

if its bleeding off that quick and your schrader valve is leaking i would definately start there. i wouldnt expect to pay more than $10-15 at the local dealer for something like that, but i might be surprised?

My confusion on the explanation is that masterbrenden does not make clear if the pressure bleed-off is after shut down or as the engine is running. If the bleed-off is occuring just after start-up when engine is running then the leak at the schrader valve would be massive to get to 0 pressure even when the fuel pump is running, so the fix would be obvious. If the bleed-off is after shut down then that may be normal and the lean burn may have another cause. Either way the valve needs to be repaired for safety reasons of raw fuel leaking on a hot engine is bigger trouble waiting to happen.

fixed the schrader valve leak, it is still not holding pressure
the bleed off is when it is not running, it only takes about 5 to ten minutes to bleed off
after that it is about 15-20 second of cranking to start if i don't cycle it about three times

I think you have two different problems. The bleed off is why you have to cycle the key a few times to make it start up, but if you have good fuel pressure idling, then bleed off doesn't seem to be the culprit. Do you have one lean code, or two? If you have one, I'd be checking out O2 sensors, or maybe checking for a stuck/plugged injector. If you have two codes, look for a vacuum leak.

If you work at a shop, you may already know this stuff, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

i have been looking for a vacuum leak and found one today but all the parts store are closed here today so part were a no go
it will have to wait till tomorrow
