fuel mileage

I was wondering what people get for mileage? I always always get 18 mpg. Highway, city, topper/no topper, exhaust/stock, drive hard/easy. Are my tires too small so that they remove other factors and make engine speed the only thing that dictates mileage? Had a 98, 31x10.50s, got 20-23 mpg. I try to keep my revs low when I'm looking for mileage, is it better to let it rev up more? I am about to give it a brake job in the back(they're worn) Hopefully that helps in this, I can't afford the gas prices and owning a truck much longer. Truck is 03, xcab, 4x4, stick, 4.0 only 60k on it, dynomax catback, worthless chunk of aluminum by my throttlebody, 289.1 mi/15.519 gal

I used to consistently get 21 to 22 on every tank no matter where I drove with a 2002 2WD 4.0 auto. In the last year or so it has dropped to 20.5 to 21 and I can't figure out why. Might be tune-up stuff or the tires wearing down, who knows? Still not bad as the EPA hwy estimate is 21 and I get it on every tank.

YES, Let it rev up some, but don't lay into the throttle at all, just let it gradually increase until you get to around 2800-3000RPM before you make your shift.

Trying to keep the RPM lower not only harms your MPG, but it can harm the engine, too (lugging causes tremendous wear on the bottom end (rod bearings, crank, etc)).

I will say 18 MPG all around is still not bad at all on a 4.0L. Mine gets around 17 in-town, and 21-22 on the highway (truck is lifted a bit as well).

Your doing just fine. My 02 3.0 4x4 with 4.10's averages around 15-16 with 19.5 being the best tank yet.

Keeping in mind I drive with a very light foot, my 1995 Grand Cherokee with
5.2 V8 gets 17 to 18 around country town and 21 plus on the interstates.
Did I mention it has 169,000 miles, nothing done on the engine or trans. Viscous coupler replaced at 110,000 miles. 70,000 miles on 235/70/15 inch Michlein tires with 3 to 4/32 tread left. No plans on getting rid of it.
At 100,000 miles I changed every fluid in it including differentials. This is good stuff. Maybe I'm lucky, maybe its the way I maintain it.

BTW, I had a 4.0 in a regular Cherokee that only got 19 highway.

My 93 reg cab with 3.0 and manual rwd gets 23 mpg on high way,have'nt check city driving cause i don't do much city driving. 191K on it.

shit my 94 4.0 got about 13-14(4x4) with 3.27's and 31 /10.50's on it. got tired of that and put in a 331 stroker/AOD,33 thornbirds,and 4.10's. now i get about 12-14. if i could just get 16-17 out of it id be super happy. right now, not so much
