fuel issues

On the fuel pump relay i have power at the yellow wire and no power at the red wire.

Then something not right @ the EEC relay. Check the ground, should have +12v on the yellow or yellow/black wire. Check for 12v on red/light green wire - that would be from the ignition switch. Getting close..

the ground wire to the battery with the round connector is good all the way till it goes into the wire loom..

with key in the on postion , i checked power at the fuel pump relay, i have a solid yellow, solid red, orange n drk green, and a lighter orange n green wire... of all those the yellow is the only one with power ..

At the fuel pump relay, should have 12 volts at the red wire with the key on. I have a basic diagram, but the colors are a little different. Circuit is mostly the same minus the fuel pump monitor (pin 8).

diagram.jpg

1) Key is turned on,
2) EEC relay turns on, which supplies 12v to red wire
3) EEC grounds fuel pump relay, and turns it on,
4) Pump runs

Sorry the diagram so erratic, I cut out everything that was irrelevant from a much bigger diagram.

ok so i played a lil on it today ( its freezing outside here in mi) i got a new test light and checked everything.

with key on , the fuel pump relay has power to all wires except an orange/ drk green wire.

the relay on the passengers wheel well that has a blue and red wire that go to the drivers side to another relay seem to all work cuz blue is ground and red is power. the relay on the drivers side has the red and blue from pass side a black and another red . the red coming from pass side is hot , and blue and black are ground, the other red has nothing. i replaced that relay and still nothing.

im honestly at a loss here and am about to just make a switch or get a relay and make my own circut here. ide much rather fix the issue but im confused.

this may sound stupid but is there a fuse for it somewhere?? i lookied in the fuse panel under the dash and i didnt see a fuel pump fuse and theres no fuse block under the hood??

The tan/lt green wire on the fuel pump relay shown above shouldn't have 12 volts when the pump is running, it should be grounded by the ecm pin 22. The 12 volts just feeds thru the relay's coil when the pump is turned off since the ecm pin 22 output is just floating at a high impedance state. Hope that makes sense.

They use fuse links inline with the wires. If fuse link is blown, won't have power at the yellow wire that is fused. The diagram should be all you need to figure out where the power isn't, not much more I can suggest that would make things any easier besides a diagram for an '87 model year that matches the specific wiring color (but the circuit in the diagram I posted is the same).

Here, got on autozone and looked at their diagram for an '87:

EEC Relay (Brown plug):

Red/Light Green: +12v from ignition switch
Black/Light Green: Ground
Yellow: Fused Power
Red: +12v that gets switched on

Fuel Pump Relay:

Red: +12v from EEC relay
Tan/Light Green: Ground from EEC
Yellow: Fused Power
Orange/Light Blue: +12v that goes to fuel pump

Can't really tell what's going on from your description, but sounds like a previous owner might have beat you to the punch on modifying the way this works(?).

Not sure if this applies? But see if next to the battery you have a black box type operation that is about 2" wide and 8" long or so. It's a cover over a set of main fuses. There is a fuel pump fuse. (It's used on our 89....so I'm not sure if yours has it or not) But that fuse being blown will kill the whole thing.

nope no box on gen 1s. im taking it to a good automotive electrical shop next week.

Gen-IIs have the power distribution box - 86-88 2.9L Gen-Is have inline fuse links.

just got it fixed the shop said it was a fusible link at the bottom of the passenger fender by the firewall..
