well i just picked up a 95 ranger 5 speed 4 cylinder and my fuel gauge seems to be back words or something when the truck is on it shows empty when turned off it rises very odd.

what i was wondering was if any one else has this problem and if they know how to fix it?

someone may have taken the needle off at one time and f**ked it up

thats how my battery gauge is.

i would go fill the tank then take the needle off. then start the truck and put the needle on pointing to full while its running. then you should be ok

hope that makes sense.

Chances are good that is simply the float in the tank has holes in it. When it fills with gas, it sinks, always reporting empty.

You can get a float at Ford for $8. Taking the bed off to replace it, sucks. 6 T-55 (?, might be T50) bolts (you'll need a breaker bar) and disconnect the 3 fuel filler neck screws and the tail light harness under the center of the tailgate. It's the only connector under there.

Earl,
Just drove my "new" acquisition home today. A couple of things I really want to fix....one being the fuel gauge.
Could you tell me if it's easier to pull the tank out or to take the bed off. I've never done either one........and certainly not trying to be a smarta$$.
Eight bucks for a float would be a lot better than about 150 for the whole assembly.
Thanks,
Tom

its way easier to take the bed off. i had to do it to replace my fuel filler hose for the truck to pass smog.

took maybe 45 mins and an extra set of hands to get the bed off

It is way easier for me to drop the tank. Takes me about twenty minutes to pull the tank, replace the sender, install the tank, and start it.
I have read that many people here prefer to pull the bed.

I tried pulling the tank off. I cussed a lot. I ended up taking the bed off.
The float was the problem. It was a little over 9 bucks at the dealer here.
Now, I have to replace the fuel filler hose. Do you know if those are usually in stock or will I have to wait a day or so to put the bed on?
Thanks,
Tom

GOOD GRIEF!! Anyone try buying a fuel filler neck for one of these little trucks? The dealer said he was giving me a super bargain for $300. Ummm. I came back to the house, looked it up on the web. Total cost to my door is $84.95.....A lot better than 300!
And....he told me the list price was something like $500!
