86 ford ranger xlt 4x4 looking for the fuel filter. cant find it anywhere. followed the fuel lines from tank to engine. found something that looked like the filter but it was long and skinny and had electrical going to it. turns out this was the pump? no clue as this where this 'pump" is sitting is where the fuel filter sits on every ford ive ever seen. totally stumped. can anyone give me any guidance on this matter?

As the fuel line goes closer to the engine, about 12" in front of the fuel pump you described, is the Fuel Filter. Near the Exhaust Manifold, on the frame.

its covered by a metal shield like on the pump right? if so i believe the autoparts store sold me the wrong filter cause this fram filter looks way too big.

Yep....it's got a heat shield/mount covering it, similar to the mount that is used on the frame mounted pump.

As a matter of fact, on later vehicles, with only 1 tank mounted pump....the location that is used as the frame mounted High Pressure Pump, was then re-used as the filter mount.

i havent had a chance to check on it. just started having starter issues after i put a new one on. i read something early this morning saying that it was by the transfer case.
