At on point in the life of this ranger i have taken out the black fuel canister with 4 connections and by-passed it. In my latest endeavor to overcome the rusty fuel system I replaced the fuel filter that i put in place some time ago (4 years) .I placed it in the way it was taken out, backwards of flow. This filter is placed on the return line. Is this a mistake i caught myself at. Any advise is appreciated. thanks Dirty

The OUT to engine fuel line needs the filter, to keep out debris that could clog Jets or injectors
The return line doesn't need a filter

The return was on the canister type filter for two reasons, to keep the canister full and for the Dual gas tank option

The Dual tank canister was also a "switch", it would have 4 lines on one side and 2 on the other
So the Returns were also changed when the OUT lines were

So there is no reason for the fuel filter that i placed backwards in the return line, Correct?

Correct

Just need a filter on the OUT to engine fuel line

Thanks @RonD, The black canister went away a long time ago. I had to splice in a hard piece where two of the lines broke or rotted off. The round canister was full of dirt so i ditched it. Heard some hold a filter, not mime. I don't remember how many lines were attached, thought only 4. Two connectors survived so i filtered it. Apparently the wrong way. Could this cause undo pressure on the system? Can i ditch the extra filter and splice in a male/male line connection. Thanks for all your help.

Yes, you can ditch the Return line filter and just splice the line together, no it wouldn't have hurt anything

The old canisters main use with fuel injection was as a reservoir, so may or may not have a filter inside

High pressure pumps have no suction, they can not "pull" fuel in from the gas tank, which is why 1986 to 1988 Rangers with fuel injection also needed an in tank fuel pump, to feed the high pressure pump in the frame rail
In 1989 the high pressure pump was moved inside the gas tank so only the one pump was needed

Thank you again @RonD, Hope its thawed out in the great white north. Dirty

Or put in a spin-on fuel filter:

Canister or spin on filters are a must have with diesels, because you need to change the filter so often compared to gasoline filters

15k-20k miles for smaller diesels, so 1 to 2 years, 10k for larger truck engines, diesel is pretty dirty stuff
Gasoline filters are every 5 to 8 years, so 60k to 100k miles
