the black canister in between the high pressure pump and the fuel filter on the drivers side frame rail... looks like its a canister style filter but when i unscrewed the bowl there was nothing in it but gas

I would say that no filter to be there. not to say that ealier versions didn't have some kind of filter.
does this have dual tanks?? thinking that it was used in conjuction with dual tanks as small resivor after the switching valve....to help eliminate hesitation when goign from one tank to the other.

Thought that was what you were talkin about. Earlier models had a filter in it....in 86 or 87 they went to just a reservoir....no filter in it.
