How difficult would it be to change a front universal on an 88 BII? It is just starting to let its presence be known. As long as I dont engage 4WD will it be ok to wait? What happens if I dont change it? I am new to these vehicles and not sure what I need to do. I do think I should change it but I dont know how critical it is. The engine is a 2.9 5 speed.

When you say front u-joint I bet you mean an outer by the wheel. If you keep the transfer case out and the hubs out it shouldn't leave you by the side of the road.

The hardest part about fixing one of those is getting the inner hub off the spindle you have to beat the tar out of it.It's not too bad though and some good material on here to help it will give you a chance to repack your wheel bearings anyway.

Dad and I changed mine in my 89 ranger it has the D28 also and like the previous posted said the spindle can be a BIG peta. We only changed the outer ones and they were rusted so bad we coulden't get the retaining rings out and had to cut the u-joint in half then beat them out. I would change them if you have time it sure quited up the front of my truck when in 4wd.

I am not planning on using the 4WD. Its going to be a go to the store vehicle. Driven maybe 5000 miles a year.
