I am planning to pull apart the right side shaft on my 87 BII to correct the shaft phasing since the shop that worked on it didn't pay any attention to the phasing. The phasing is not even close and I am still getting vibration after the bearings and u-joint issues were fixed. It's better, no nasty pings but still not good when speed gets up above 40 to 50 mph. It may not be the phasing but this seems to be the first thing to fix.

The bearings, rotors, etc are new so I am not expecting to find any problems. Just want to fix the phasing.

I have never gone any further in the past than pulling off a rotor. I have the shop manual so have access to many details torque instructions/specs. I wish the manual had some more diagrams/pics for this particular disassembly, but I think I am ready to jump into this.

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions? How hard is this beyond getting off the rotor? Any surprises or special cautions?

Any materials I should make sure I have such as bearing seals, grease, etc before getting started?

Thanks,

And yes, in the work done that bearing was to be pulled and replaced. Or should I say the shop was supposed to replace all the bearings while it was apart good or bad. And if I recall correctly, when I got it back from the shop a couple weeks ago they said that particular bearing was completely bad.

If they didn't change that bearing or anything they were supposed to they are going to hear an ear full cause I am annoyed enough to have to pull this apart because they didn't phase the shaft which would have cost them nothing had they considered it at the time. Their assumption was that since there was no key it didn't make a difference when they had it apart.

Did the work today..in the snow..I must be nuts.

Thank you for the info. The biggest problem was getting the spindle off. The spindle was in fair condition, but the little cup around it was in bad shape.

Other than getting that off it went pretty smooth except I didn't have a 1/2 inch adapter for my low range torque wrench but I managed to make it work.

Results so far of getting the phasing right seems to be pretty good.

they actually said that about the key, or lack of a key :icon_surprised:

a licensed mechanic said that to you and approved that?

Yep, the mechanic stated that without a key the phasing isn't important. That was one of several statements expressing doubt about the phasing needing to be correct.

As to being "licensed", far as I know there is no licensing required in this state.

I am pretty sure there is a element to justify they did it right. That if I had asked them about the phasing before the work was done they may or may not have had a different answer.

For me, I just wanted to get the phasing right to eliminate that before jumping into any conclusions about anything else.

I felt at this point they had a vested interest in being right and that while they seemed willing to work on it again, I feared they would "find" something else to explain the vibration.

well, in a perfect situation with the axle straight its not too critical....

but in a real world situation it needs to be phased.

sorry to hear this either way, a bit surprised i suppose but not overly
