is there a kit to get rid of the crazy over priced front cv end driveshaft
on my 07 fx4

The CV can be replaced, it only held on with a circlip that lives under the domed dust cover.

And those joints shouldn't be considered "weak", because they are pretty much the same as the axle joints that handle four times the torque...

CV joints keep the speed of the two u joints constant, hence the name constant velocity. They are pretty stout, I wouldnt remove them. Single ujoint setups have a fast slow rotation type. It causes a lot of wear on them. There is a company with a new type of CV joint. It almost like a big red/black ball. In petersons magazine, and apparently they are about 45% stronger than the standard cv joint. maybe look into them.

Actually on a 1998-up Ranger there is a true "Rezeppa" type CV joint on the T-case end of the front driveshaft.

he Rezeppa type joint has angled ball tracks that allow the joint to have SOME "plunge" travel, but this comes at the expense of limited misalignment angle capability.

NOT that this is an issue with an SLA front suspension as the Diff and the T-case
move relative to one another only to the extent of the rubber mounts for the engine, trans and diff.

These joints are designed to handle axle torque as they are commonly used
as the inner joint on European cars.

But like all mechanical things they all wear out... eventually....

the op's post had nothing to do with strength.

it was about cost.

its about more than cost. He wants a cheaper conversion, but obviously cuz it broke. If hes only after cheap replacement then he needs to go to the junkyard and pick up parts. If he wants to avoid replacing them again, then maybe he will listen to the advice being offered him.

If strength wasnt his issue, he wouldnt be replacing his CV shaft.

while a reasonable assumption,it is still an assumption.

there is no reason given for why the shaft is being replaced, simply that he's looking for a cheaper way to do it.

he has also not stated that there is anything wrong with the cv end, simply that this type of driveshaft is expensive.

for all we know,he may have dented the tube or broken the ears on the u-joint end, requiring replacement of the shaft.information to draw the conclusion that there's a problem with the cv is simply not there.

Those CV's DO fail... typically they are not AS "overdesigned" (overkill) as a double cardan (double U-joint) "CV joint" is, but in good condition they are smoother, lighter, more compact... ETC...

Frankly Double cardans fail all the time and the "Centering ball" assembly is an expensive PITA to replace

Generally speaking a Rezeppa may be more expensive, but is one hell of a lot easier to replace,

Like I said remove the dust cap, remove the circlip knockj the joint and reverse the proceedure to put it all together...

No ball joint presses.... hammers, etc...

Yup. Mine just took a crap on me. It has been making a clicking sound for a couple months, but I kept putting off buying that $50 "ball". Well it went, and destroyed the housings on both ends of the double carden. Now that $50 doesn't sound that bad compared to a whole new shaft.
