Front Diff. oil change ?

His 02 has a removable cover but the suspension cross member is still in the way of just removing it....you have to drop the front diff housing out of the truck.

right. choose between doing it right the first time or maybe having to go back and drop it out anyway. already 7 years on the gasket at least, hoping the fluid in there is not that old really.
i spent several months trying to take care of little leaks around my engine. always seemed to be a new one pop up within a few days. finally did it right and pulled the engine out changing every gasket and seal that could be found on it. cleaning everything, putting in new oil pump, ps pump/reservoir, etc. now, no leaks. should have done that to begin with.
just my $.02.

so pulling the front end for no other reason than to change the oil is the right way??? i guess i'm not ambitious enough to work with you

HEY , all you guys had some great Ideas, but way over my head,Hee Hee. guess i will just try pumping it out. Thanks Chuck

im going to drill and tap the housing for a drain on our 05 sport trac as soon as something major goes bad like a wheel bearing or cv shaft. why ford wouldnt put a drain on the front axle but include one on the IRS explorer axle is beyond me?

I am just wondering if you ever did this. I want to drill and tap the housing but I dont want to drill into a gusset

If it is a piece that has beem stamped, there are no gussets.

It would probably be better to drop the axle and do the job with the cover off so you can see where the drill bit will come through. That’s what I plan on doing when the time comes. Plus it will minimize the mess. Sucking fluid out the fill hole leaves quite a bit in the bottom of the pumpkin still.

yeah, that is ideal. But I am not pulling the axle to drain the fluid, that is just plain stupid

Oh, that stinks. Hmmm. Save up a few more bucks. Then drop it. Remove the cover and drill and weld in the bung. And while it's open, drop in an Aussie locker. Then put it all back together.

well this thread has been brought back from the dead.

you have a plow on the avatar picture.

if i had a plow...and used it...

i would completely disassemble, clean and antisieze everything and put it back together every other year on the entire powertrain...

so WHEN i fawk something up...fixing it when its 20 degrees out is cake. not to mention how pristine i KNOW my fluid would be...instead of a mystery.

but...i am stupid.

This thread got out of hand. The original post was asking how to get the fluid out. Ya'll are going back and forth about what someone else should do and that your way is the right way. I happen to have an easy answer for his problem. I made a syphon out of a plastic container with a good screwed on lid and some sealant and hoses. You put an air nozzle at an angle on the one end of the tube so it sucks the fluid out. Works flawlessly. When I got my truck the trans fluid was over filled. Used this to pull out a few quarts. Here is a pic of what I made. You can find youtube vids on this contraption.

There is a thing that looks like a grease gun but works like a syringe that works good too.
