right now I got a weird problem! I'm putting the front seal in the time chain cover, and I coated it with oil like the Haynes says, and it just slips in, no need for a socket and hammer or anything.. This doesn't feel right especially since I can just push it all the way through.. Anybody else had this issue? Should I coat the outside of the seal (where it touches the timing cover) with rtv and position it flush with the front of the timing cover?

Even my Haynes manual said id need a socket and hammer..

I tried rtv btw and it just pops out by itself

If anyone else has this issue I found a cure: the national seal, it's metal and is a nice snug fit

Not sure what "the nation seal" is, but the main seal should be tight in the cover(hammer in place) and tight around the crankshaft(even oiled)

The front and rear main seals are pressure seals, there is oil pressure behind them, not alot but more pressure than on the oil pan gasket or valve cover gasket.

Which is why when they leak, they leak alot of oil

National, the brand by federal mogul. They make fel pro but the fel pro front seal is rubber, no metal backing in it so it just conforms to the diameter Of the timing chain covers hole. The national seal is metal however and so you got to hammer it in, in order for it to go in.

I had replace these seals a couple times before on other vehicles, so I was surprised when I could just slip it in with my fingers.. Thought it was the cover but luckily it was only that seal!
