Front Clunk V2.0

The dimension of the slot isn't at issue... precicely...

"errosion" of the upper slot likely is.

Remove the pads and look.

the dammage is usually quite visible.
If not running a finger through it will feel the dammage.

That problem is wh I built my truck with the '95-97 Beams, knuckles and brakes.

the early Ranger brake system used from 1983 through the end of 1994 the steering knuckle is a "wear item" and it wears in that upper pad locating slot.

the 1995-97 setup the brake pads are located entirely by a BOLTED ON
caliper bracket..

Poor location control of the inboard pad due to steering knuckle wear
is THE cause of brake binding, inconsistant brake release, and eventually
caliper piston damage...the other issue with the '83-94 brakes, the
outboard pad is located only by the caliper and under some circumstances
the pad can slip out of position and the rotor can "spit" the pad right off
the truck...

On the '95-up brake setup the caliper's ONLY job is to SQUEEZE
the pads against the rotor.

The 1995-97 Beams have a slightly different lower balljoint reinforcement,
but completely different steering knuckles.

the 1995-97 uses a BOLTED ON caliper bracket for the two-piston
brakes.

The shaft, spindle, wheel bearings, and lockout hubs are all the same
the rotor and caliper are different.

the later brakes DO NOT suffer from the issue of inconsistancy and if the caliper bracket wears you take it off throw it away and bolt another one on.

the calipers, bracket and pads can be robbed off any '95-up Ranger, or Explorer.

the rotors knuckle and beams must come off a 1995-1997 Ranger

BTW, if your truck is non-ABS you must get the drivers side hose for a '97.

Well its not the brake pads making the clunk sound....Its something in the steering system. with the truck sitting still and turning to the right just before full lock it clunks, same spot evertime and only with the wheels on the ground... so I think its in the steering gear box, anyone ever had this happen? if I have to replace the steering gear box is there a worth while upgrade? maybe a mod can move this to the steering forum:icon_thumby:
