if you regear the back axle but don't re gear the front at the same time, like say i am going to do the back my self then drive it to a shop and have the front done will i be able to drive it with the rear different as long as i dont lock the hubs in and put it in 4x4

You'll be fine as long as the transfer case stays in 2-H.

Richard

yep. I ran my rig like this for a month almost. Did the rear, and didnt have time to do the front. It was middle of winter, and actually got stuck...so I put in 4wd regardless and made sure to just spin the tires in the snow. Now if I had caught traction that would have been a different story. Moral....you'll be more than fine, just dont put it in 4wd by mistake or have someone else put it in by mistake.

Question though, if youre regearing the back, whats to stop you from doing the front?

No experience doing the front gears, time, money, laziness?

Pick one.

Pete

well i don't have any experience and time is an issue as well, but i might just rip it out anyway. i have a Chilton manual there is probably something in there on it. and if i get it ripped out and cant figure it out i will just take the carrier to a shop that way it will cost less.

Dude! You HAVE TO get it perfectly aligned, shimmed, and everything. If not, it's gonna wear improperly and after 500 mi, it'll be worthless. It may work depending on how close you get it, but if you're unsure and don't have a micrometer, I'd go to the shop.

wait...you do understand that a gear install IS NOT simple bolt in affair. I feel like I say this at least 3 times a week. A lot of fine adjustments have to be made, and spec's have to be within thousandths of an inch.

gear swaps aren't a simple bolt-on affair, but it is an easy job if you have a digital micrometer, magnetic base dial gauge, a bearing splitter-type remover, a full install kit, and an oven and a freezer, and a lot of patience.

and an oven and a freezer, and a lot of patience.

Patience, yes, but coupled with a BFH.

That's how I've done mine. That pinion bearing is a mighty PITA.

Pete

I found that with the pinion gear in the freezer for a 1/2hour and the bearing in the oven @ 260F for a 1/2hour, they'll go together like skirts and stairs!

Note taken. Seriously. It's an interference fit, of course. I guess normally I'm just not ALLOWED to put car parts where food is. I'm determined for next time, though.

How do you separate them initially, if you were to reuse your old bearing?

Bearing splitter and a press.

Bearing splitter and a press.

OK, well yea. A 20-ton press is the easiest way to do anything...I guess I was suggesting a solution for a household garage or parking lot mechanic.

*shrugs*

I've already done sets of gears on 2 different occasions. I guess I have a method. :icon_twisted:

I'm always open to other ways people work a project...

Meh, the Harbor Freight 12 ton press is pretty reasonable.
