ive had my truck for a few months now and it has some rusty spots on my frame. it looks like its all surface rust but i still want to stop it as much as i can(not an easy task in new england). has anybody ever used the spray rust converter they sell at advanced auto parts or know of anything else that will stop the rust, and what kind of paint holds up to salt and road grime well? i know about por15 and eastwood but im not going that far yet plus its expensive.

the spray on is SO-so. It is better to paint it on with a brush you get a thicker coat and the thicker it is the longer it will hold up. Actually any good enamel paint will work. I have used farm paints from ace/ true value hardware stores with good results.

They make stuff that's just like Rhino line that comes in a spray can. That's your best bet in my opinion. Very thick and durable. You can get it at any hardware store, I know home depot has it. Good luck bud.

I had that issue with the rear part of my truck, frame rails, axle, it was all nasty. Looked like the previous owner used it for loading/unloading a boat. Took the bed off and wire-wheeled as much off as I could. Then used that rubberized undercoating spray all along the frame and on the underside of the bed. Took about a whole day to get done but it has held up really good so far. I must have used like 5-6 cans, def. put on a hefty amount. BTW what part of MA you in? Good Luck

You need to remove the rust before spraying it with anything, otherwise it will just eat away beneath what you sprayed on....

Nothing will 'stop' rust if it's already there, you need to remove the rust, then spray it, that way, it has no where to get started.

I reccomend por15, or some type of bedliner, or some rubberized undercoating

viva- thats a good idea ill look into
ryan- im in dartmouth for school but live in worcester

rust...its a mother f er

when you get time strip it to the rails and clean it off then paint it...anything else is wasted effort.

yeah it is. its what finally killed my saturn. i decided im gunna talk to the dealer first and see if they will do anything because they sold it to me that way and it is still under warranty or get a price from them to fix it(parents idea).

Well the dealer isnt going to do anything about it, and most body shops wont touch it. So it looks like I'm gonna have to POR15 the frame myself over spring break.

Bah, that's nothing. You should see the coil bucket that just snapped in half due to rust on my 92 explorer. That was an interesting experience.

Really though, only in the most extreme cases does rust get the point that it affects a ranger frame's structural integrity. What you do have to worry about is the suspension bracketry, such as the shackles and shackle mounts, leaf spring mounts, coil buckets, and sometimes the cross member above the gas tank. The frame rails themselves only seem to develope surface rust and it never becomes a structural issue. At least around here in the salt belt anyways.

I have the same problem with my Ranger, despite having an electronic corrosion protection system on the truck.... Complained to the dealership that installed the rustproofing an they said that they'd only do something when it rotted through...

I looked at POR15 an some of the other similar things....

But I'm not sold on any of them except maybe Rust Bullet....

After looking at the local tractor supply store an doin some research, I think I'm gonna just clean the frame rails an paint it with some tractor paint with hardener. See, the thing with many of those coatings like POR15 is that you're not supposed to touch them up... Tractor paint with hardener, I can touch that up whenever anything happens without a problem.

ah then you know what i mean. i lost my saturn a few months ago when the lower control arm mount rotted off while i was doing 30 around a onramp curve. i barely kept it on the road. as for the frame ive been told that the frame will take longer to rust out than the truck will last, but after that experience im not taking any chances. ive seen a few trucks with rusted through frames. i figure if i coat it well now i wont have to worry about it much later on.

that rust bullet looks pretty good but one of the body shop owners showed me his truck's frame which he coated in por15 3 years ago and it still looks new. plus im going to spray it with rustoleum once in a while for a little added security.

WOW :shok:

Are those holes rusted through the frame? I think I would start with a different truck and get it undercoated ASAP.
