I have a 1991 extra cab ranger with a 2.3l that I swapped a 4x4 trans into in hopes for a dana 30 swap but that fell thru. I also have a 1988 4x4 extra cab frame sitting lifted with a 8.8 and gears that I'd like to swap with the 91 frame. Can some one please explain to me what the differences are between the two generation rangers frames and can this job be done with out any custom modifications. Thanks

The only real difference will be the front bumper mounts.

There will also be a difference in beam mounting between 2x4 and 4x4. It may be easier to swap bodies ; the 91 onto the 88.

That's the plan putting the 91 body onto the 88 frame. So all the body mounts should all line up with no modification?

yup and the front bumper from the 91 can be made to work also

From recent experience, I'd strongly suggest using either a two post hoist or a forklift to remove/replace the bodies.

Engine hoists can be used, but it is considerably more work and you will need some strong sawhorses (or other support) that are wide enough that you can roll the frame out from under the body. Doing this on a solid, flat floor is also highly recommended...gravel driveways and tiny wheels don't make for smooth rolling with that much weight on them.

I would have liked to take pictures of the swap I just did but it became quite hectic to the point where some mistakes were made...fortunately, we got all the bugs worked out on the unwanted cab so the wanted cab didn't suffer damages.
