I have 2005 Ford Ranger XLT. It has power windows but doesn't have power locks. If it doesn't have power locks then I think it doesn't have a PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) too. I have a Ford non-transponder key which means it has no chip to turn the ignition but I want to get a bigger key. I was wanting two keys I have posted in the forum and they are both transponder keys. Will the Transponder keys still turn the ignition with the chip inside even though my Ranger doesn't have a chip reader?

Transponder:
36840
Non-Transponder:
36842

Power locks is not part of the PATS(passive anti-theft system), so wouldn't matter if you did or didn't have them

But a 2005 Ranger does NOT have PATS, only year it didn't from 1999 to 2011, Ford had a problem so skipped that year

As long as the handle will fit in the key slot it would be fine to use transponder keys

So even with the

So even with a transponder key, it can still turn the ignition and crank the truck if I take the transponder keys to have it copied from the non-transponder key like Lowes or Home Depot. Will that work or do I have to see the Dealership?

Off topic, but maybe you would know since you are some kind of ford memory bank. :icon_rofl: Why did ford skip that year? I always wondered about that... I near drove myself nuts trying to program keys on a 2005 once before realizing there was nothing to program. :ROFLMAO:

Yes, any key place should be able to cut matching keys, again as long as it fits inside the key slot, the transponder handles look wider and thicker

Not sure why Ford skipped 2005, they did go to the HEC digital dash in 2004 and it has the PATS module built in, so maybe there was an issue with it, but never read about it
I have also read it was Optional in 2005, but its not mentioned in 2005 brochures, and never read about any 2005 that had it

I think we have decided the Ranger just didn't have PATS at all in 05. The shop manual makes no mention of it anywhere that it would usually be brought up. PATS information is usually found in section 419-01 of the shop manual. The 05 Ranger manual does not have 419-01, only 419-10, which is Multi-function Electronic Modules, so the SJB.

If I had to guess I would say it likely had something to do with the Sport Tracs. The Ranger and the Explorer were the same platform up until 02. The Sport Trac carried over the legacy platform until 2005. The ST skips 2006 in the shop manual, but 06/07 was when they were moved over to the IRS Explorer platform. It may have been that Ford was winding down production of certain parts used in both PATS systems in 04, and decided that the Sport Trac got priority for PATS parts and so they just didn't install it on the Rangers at all.

I bet that was (would be?) a REALLY short trip!

Brains in jars.

I got dibs on their brains when they die... called it already.
