So I saw this (http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17709) on the forums and was pretty impressed by the 5.0 L engine that was put in there. The 4.0 L is in there pretty snug already. This all got me thinking though, which was a problem as I am not terribly mechanically inclined, though I'm eager to learn. My question for you, the forum goers, is about whether or not one could retrofit the Ford Ranger with the new 3.5 L Eco Boost engine that is being offered in the F-150 and is ridiculously powerful and pretty economical. If you can wedge a 5.0 in there why not a 3.5?

Sure and take pictures, thatd be awesome. youll need to get alot of "other" parts i believe. for 5.0l most say its best to have a donor vehicle to rape as you do swap... good luck buying a 2011 f150 to swap engines with...

5 years down the road an eco boost may be a reasonable swap but you have to let some get wrecked first

bring me a truck and a ecoboost truck engine or a current 5.0 truck engine and i will do the labor for free, you just buy the parts. will be on my time line but thats free labor.

this will happen any time now somewhere....they streetrodded the ecoboost before it even came in an oem package iirc..

not so sure, the 5.0 package is pretty friggen cost effective for what it is.

idk i was always thinkin about other 3.5l engines, of course... one im thinkin of is my fav v6... the vq35. not really a truck engine, but a nice little 250hp/tq. sorry... i miss my altima...
I always got around 26 mpg average. not bad for a v6 which i couldnt keep my foot off of gas. thats why shes gone...

i wish someone around me would tell me an engine theyd put in for free as theyd enjoy the fruits of their labor. Its like trying to find a trail to run down at fast speeds pretending im in arizona... ughhh...

With the turbos, I think the fenders would get in the way. But anything is possible with a grinder and welder. How a 3.7L v6 swap? More power than a 4.0L v6, and will be more of them later in the junkyards since it is also in the mustang.

If they kept making Rangers (in any form) I would think this a logical motor since it replaced the 4.0 SOHC in Mustangs, and if it can get 31mpg with an auto and put out around 300hp/tq, it'd have to net you at least 24mpg in something as upright as a ranger with the right tranny and gearing combo.

So do people feel like the 3.5 EcoBoost would fit in the Ranger's engine compartment? Has anybody seen a Ranger with a 3.7 off a Mustang?

I don't know about you guys but I just love the sound of a 360hp 420lbft Ranger

I had this same idea but for a fox body Mustang. Although I wouldn;t swap one into my Ranger because there are a few engines I'd rather swap in, I'd love to see this done.

Really not bad to bring any rig into the 21st century.

It would have been logical to kill 4.0 years ago when that thing first came out. Even the 3.5 would have been a good replacement that might have helped the Ranger get better milage than a fullsize.

Would be cheaper to get a junkyard 5.0 and get a rebuilt kit. Plus you get the added fun of putting it together, like legos with a torque rating.

The pushrod just doesn't compare to the OHC very well at all. For a TTB truck sure, you are pretty much stuck with the OHV because of size. If you have room for the OHC (like in a 98+)... gawd it would be a riot. Power that just don't quit, and very good milage. 411hp, gets 25mpg in my brothers barely broken-in GT can run on either 87 or premium without an issue... it is almost too good to be true.

I kinda wonder if the little standalone brain box will still be the same hp or if it would have a sportier tune. :icon_confused:

In a couple years they will be cheaper for a used one, but right now I doubt you would be able to get one much cheaper than a new one.

And any swap can be like legos with a torque rating, everybody should do at least one :icon_thumby:
