I am new to this site, I bought my grandpas ranger over the summer, and I want to jack it up and put bigger tires on it. I found some tires that I want, but I am debating on if I should get a body lift on it too. Anyone have any input on it?

First off: Howdy and welcome to TRS!

Secondly: How big a tire do you wanna run? You might NEED a lift. And more appropriate gears for the larger tires.

Well, my dad told me that I should put 31' inch tires on it, I have new factor tires put on it before I got the truck. We were thinking if I put those on the truck, would I need to lift it? I like having the trucks that sit up high, but not too high.

31's on an 02 Edge should be only slight larger than the stock size of 235/75R15. At least that's what WalMart says it is. You shouldn't have a problem with that. Might want an opinion from someone with the newer style truck on that though. It will throw your speedometer off some though.

That's a comparison tool.^ Something I've found handy when changing tire sizes.

Thank you! I will have him look at that with me.

235's are considered to be a roughly 28" or 29" tire, 2-3" inches is a fair amount of difference.

It looked like a bigger difference than that when I went from 235's to 31x10.5's on my truck. :icon_thumby:

Leave the taco stuff for the mexican food joints and go here:

I have 31x10.5's on my 94. Bought it this way.
I get a little rubbing on the front plastic when I turn a corner sharply.

Is it a 2wd edge or a 4wd edge? I know some years the Edge came in both versions, and they had different tire sizes. If it's the 2wd it had a ~29 inch tire stock. The 4wd version had about a 30.5" tire stock. 30.5" also happens to be the actual diameter of most 31" tires.

If you had the larger tire stock it'll fit no problem. If you had the smaller tire stock (the size SenorNoob listed) it will still most likely fit with no issue. You are only talking 1.5" difference, which is only about 3/4" more into the wheel well. At most you would need a slight torsion crank and an alignment to fit those. I'll agree with 85_Ranger4x4, even an inch of difference can change the looks a lot, but it doesn't necessarily change the tire clearance a lot.

You say that you had them put new tires on before you bought the truck. How long have you had it? If those tires are still in good shape I'd wear them out before replacing them. That's what I did on my 99 4x4. When the stock size tires needed replacing it went to 31". Wasn't quite happy with that, so as soon as those wore out I went to a 32". Those took a bit of a torsion crank, but they clear fine and rides good.

Let me shed some light right quick. 235/75/16 is safe to run. I know bc I did it on my edge. At least I think that is the right size.

I will now throw some knowledge your way. Tire size consist of 3 numbers width (235/8" wide)/sidewall height (75/.5" more in tire height)/rim (16" is what is traditionally on a edge due to the suspension package that comes stock).

I recently went through this on my 8. Went with 245/40/18. 9" wide all the way around.

Sent from the front seat of my RX 8.

I've run both 255/70-16 and 265/70-16's with not a problem on a couple of 4x4, stock height.
