Oh wise ones:

I haven’t put a battery in the 87 Ranger yet to test this, but I know you’re all Ford guys, so I thought you might know....

On my 88 town car, and on my 87 town car, and also on my 96 F250, the delay wipers don’t work on a sliding scale. When I put them on delay turned down, they swipe about every 20-30 seconds. They don’t change as I turn the knob up until I get to the fastest (delay) setting, and then they swipe almost continuously (like low speed) with maybe a 1-2 second delay between swipes.

Is this common? What controls this and where is it located? BTW, these three vehicles are pristine.

& BTW, the 78 Mark V works perfect.

Any help appreciated!!

without looking at codger's link, I would say cleaning the switch is the first step. take it apart and clean everything, put some electrical grease like what you use on your brakelight/ turnsignal bulbs on the terminals and see what happens.

yeah, I would probably start there, all of my Ford wipers work just fine... that includes two explorers ('98 and '00), two Rangers ('90 and '97) and a '97 F350

The dial wiper delay on my truck didn't work. I had the three gears by moving the stalk but the end dial didn't do anything. So when I found a nice looking one at the JY I nabbed it.

Dial wiper delay now works but now my windshield squirter doesn't. :black_eye:

I think a first gen would be much different in construction than the F-150 shown in the tutorial.

I had an 88 F150 years ago that the wiper delay circuit failed. I found the module under the dash and when I pulled it out, it rattled. I found a capacitor had broken off the circuit board inside. Bought a new capacitor if the same size. Soldered it in and never had another problem.

First gen wiper delay dials suck real bad. Mine will only delay wipe if I have it set on a certain spot, guessing it's just worn out... I bet have several in my parts stash that have also gone bad... or the sprayer doesn't work.

They come up occasionally on RockAuto for about $50 new.

Next time you see a new one come up let me know.

I think Codgers link may do the trick on the F250. I’m not by the Lincoln’s right now, can’t remember if it’s similar, but I’ll be home this weekend and check.

as always, many thanks!
