While sitting back in the garage drinking beer and smoking a cigar I got to day dreaming about what I could do to a 1958 1 1/2 ton Ford that I know of. I was thinking about what kind of diesel engine I could fit in it. First that came to mind of course was the plentiful (for me at least) Mercedes M602. But then I got to thinking about what it costs every time the one I already have breaks down. Then it hit me..... We have a creature here lovingly called the Diablo Rojo (Red Devil) that up until recently were used for our primary form of public transportation. Guess what they are? Retired IH school buses.

So has anyone ever thought of putting the very plentiful and well maintained old school bus motor in a Ranger? If I recall you can pick up old school buses for a couple thousand bucks.

Here is a list of the engines they used:
Diesel V8
  • International Harvester 9.0 L (551 cu in) V8 (1979-1987)

  • D-150/170/190 (September 1978-December 1979)
  • 9.0L (January 1980-1987)

  • International Harvester IDI 6.9 L (420 cu in) (1983-1987)
  • International Harvester IDI 7.3 L (444 cu in) (1986-1989)
  • Caterpillar 3208 10.4 L (636 cu in) (1979-1981)
Inline-6
  • International Harvester DT360 5.9 L (360 cu in) (1986-1989)
  • International Harvester DT466 7.6 L (466 cu in) (1979-1989)
Any ideas from you guys on this?

I would think anything above the 7.3l would just be far to big to even fit in the truck, especially the 10L

Sent from, wait how did this get here?

there are also plentiful amounts of 6.9's, 7.3 ( idi and ps) and cummins 12, 24 and common rails, but they are just too big to fit unless you can handle lots of body work, smaller diesels much less so.

however a 10L Ranger would be amazing.

Just put the motor in the bed lol. Might need to beef up the suspension tho.....

Sent from my phone while ignoring traffic.

I don't know too much about diesels...but I think with a good welder, some c channel steel, and a bit of body work...you could add about 10" to the front frame and plop in anything longer than the current engine bay...

Makes the wheel base a bit longer...but you could then drop a stretch Ranger body on and maybe add an extra axel at the back it could probably climb Mt Whatever...

If you're looking for a project...that is...
