So here's my dilemma...my high school football team was a HUGE underdog last week. We were 6-4, the other team was 10-0. First round of playoffs, we beat them 20-6. So now we're on to the next round, and the game is this Saturday at 4:30, where once again we are the underdog. I mean, the team we're going to play thinks they're going to beat us so bad that they're already looking at film for the team they will play if they beat us. I'm supposed to work at 12-7. I'm not saying I'm going to pull a no-show at work, but I already went in and talked to this one kid who was pretty much my only shot of going to the game by switching shifts with him so I work Sunday and he covers my Saturday shift, but he can't switch. I just kind of don't know what to do. I don't want to call in sick, but at the same time, this could be my last football game as a high school student and I really don't want to miss it. I am also fairly confident that my boss will just say that there is nothing that can be done and I have to work that day, since no one else can come in. I just am kind of in a pickle, looking for some advice. What do you all think? Oh yeah, just for a little background information. A group of friends and I created The Trash Can Clan, where we took blue Rubbermaid garbage cans, cut holes in them and put yellow stripes on them with spray paint (school colors are blue and yellow). We usually wear the plastic cans to the games, but we made these really cool "Throwback Cans" as we're going to call them out of the old tin cans. The crowd and parents absolutely love us. So yeah, that kind of factors in, I guess.

well you gotta make your own decisions but i would work as much of the day as i could then leave early. whats the worst you can do, loose the job? then again im kinda fed up with my work so im about to the point that i dont really care, my advice might not be that great.

Ask the boss man if you can get off early. Offer to work extra another day if you have to. Its worked for me before.

Call in sick. I'd do it. But I'm my own boss. So I'd know right away. I might fire myself. I feel I havn't been working up to my potential. I'm slacking off on the job.

But I'm in the same shoes. I've been doing all I can to make it to all my schools foot ball games. I went to every girls volley ball game! (Spandex. oooohhh yeah)

Go dude.

Yeah that's part of why i didn't mind going to all my gf's v-ball games :clapping:

The fact is that this may be your last high school football game EVER! You will be working for the rest of your life and will have plenty of other job opportunities. If you miss that game you might regret it for the rest of your life. Call out sick, get pumped up, and go watch the game. In my opinion that is your only option. Remember, you only live once! Good Luck! Hope they win the game!:clapping:

I don't remember highschool so I doubt you'll be scarred for life if you miss the game.

But you're a kid. It's one of the last chances you'll have to make a choice on the side of irresponsibility and still get away with it. Tell him you are going and you'd like to know if he has any suggests on how you could keep your job when you do. I don't think pushing carts is going to be a tough job to replace.

i'd definitely go to the game. work sucks and youll be doing it the rest of your life so you should go have fun with your buddies, those carts can push them selves. NOW GET OUT THERE AND WEAR YOUR TRASH CAN WITH PRIDE!

dude call off. Whats the worst that can happen? You get fired from a job you cant replace? You can find a job pushing carts anywere. I would just call off sick. I work in a grocery store to and its really no big deal if someone calls off altho some people will be dicks about it just to have something to do that night.

is that why your going to attend all the wrestling matches?

Well you have your entire life to work, i say goto the game even if you do have to call in sick

Oh you know it! JK

Props on a good burn. Well done.

Wow. Teen drama.

Unless you are a starter in the game, there is NO FN WAY it is going to affect you in six months, let alone for the rest of your life.

You're wearing a trash can. Great. If you think no one does things like that in college football, you've never been to a college football game. So get involved in rally squad or the band or whatever in college. After the first game, you'll never even think about high school football again.

You might get away with being immature and irresponsible, but that's really the important thing here. The job may suck, but you can get some benefits from your supervisor even if your next job has nothing to do with groceries. "He's a very responsible, dependable worker" is about the best you can get at this age. It's gold. Stupid bridge to burn for a game.

So, ask your supervisor. He may be reasonable. If he isn't, THAT is your responsibility.

And if this is a "pickle," you lead a sheltered life. Kinda stupid to blow a work ethic over it. A real pickle is when you get fired and can't find another job because your previous supervisor says you're a flaky loser, and you have to choose between eating and paying the rent.

Sorry for the wet towel, but you asked for advice. The other stuff in this thread is very bad advice. Get out of your job legitimately, or miss the game. You'll get over it. Fast.

As for never seeing underdogs win again, here's a story from my alma mater (Cal), as reported by the other side: http://www.stanfordalumni.org/news/magazine/2002/novdec/features/theplay.html That story is the most extreme of regular cliffhangers that have been going on for more than 100 years between that rivalry.

fwiw,i see this both ways.ask now for the evening off,if your boss says no way, resign.i can see where the game is important to you, your school and probably your community.your career is built one job at a time and you do not want the next employer to talk to a boss who had to fire you, this is not good.you have your whole life ahead of you and you have be in the drivers seat, getting fired won't help.if you have to be at the game and he won't work with you,be polite and resign your position.btw,i hope your team kicks ass and takes names!
