I searched a lot of forums but cant seem to find the info I need, Can someone here please help?

I have a FM146 and want to convert to a Mazda trans.

Is there a list of vehicles that this trans comes in so I know what to keep an eye out for in the bone yard?

Also is it a direct swap, I have a 2.9 liter engine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.:icon_confused:

maybe a little more specific.

If i find another 4x4 with a 2.9 liter engine and a Mazda trans, will it bolt up with my transfer case and shafts?

If you use a Ranger or Explorer 4.0 manual transmission it will bolt up as well. I have a '94 Explorer M50D-R1 transmission in my BII which is a 2.9 as well.

I would recommend installing the 4.0 flywheel and clutch while you are at it as well.

If you have anymore questions, ask. I have done 3 of these swaps so far.

Thank you very much!

This is the info i was looking for, i have a large U-Pullit bone yard near me and rangers and BII's are a dime a dozen.

So if i find either a Ranger or BII with a 4.0 and a mazda trans then it should work? What about the transfer case and drive shafts?

I have a 91 XLT (4x4) 2.9 with an FM146.

Also i will take your advice on the flywheel and cluch.

I will gladly take any

t-case, drive shafts and everything else will work fine with the exception that the mazda trans shifter will come through the floor aprox. 2" forward of the fm146 so grab the floor plate too if its handy, another point of note is the 4.0 trans is a close ratio so first gear is noticeably crappier.

No, if you find a Ranger or an EXPLORER with a 4.0 the trans will fit.

the 4.0 flywheel is ~35% heavier and the clutch disc more than
an inch larger in diameter

The ONLY thing "different" in the installation of a Mazda trans where an FM146 (or FM132) has been is that the Mazda shifter is ~2.5" further forward and that requires a different shifter boot, floor plate and some minor carpet trimming, but EVERYTHING else is the same.

Retrofitting a Mazda into an earlier ranger ('83-87) has several "Gotchas"
depending on what was in it before, but on an '88-up you don't have those problems.

DO NOT buy a mazda trans without seeing the inside of it with the top cover removed

and "almost bad" trans isn't necissarily detectable to the average Do-it-yourself'er but one that's completely and utterly fooked is pretty obvious.

BTW, I actually saw my first junkyard 4.0 bronco2 today.

No it wasn't stock, Vin code "T" for the engine as expected.

And unsuprisingly a DEAD A4LD.

What year was it Allan?
