My credo
If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
The manual says 80-90 gear oil, this one had ATF in it when I took it apart.
What does everyone recommend for fluid in the Mitsubishi P.O.S.?

Gear oil, some one goofed last time

I used ATF once.

I no longer have that transmission.

Thanks, I most always believe the manual but it's 34 years old and newer information might have been available. I read on here somewhere that someone was recommending ATF. When Mercon V was released Ford said to never use it where Mercon was called for, then Ford discontinued Mercon and Mercon V was the replacement.

I believe you're specifically supposed to use GL-4 gear lube and NOT GL-5 as well (may as well muddy the waters a bit 😂) GL-5 has additives that will eat the synchros. Should be able to use other fluids labeled as "manual transmission fluid" too. Redline MTL, etc
