I have my trans out on the bench. I have the replacement coming in the mail. My book says there are 2 bolts holding it in. I can't see any bolts other than the bolts for the bell housing. I looks like the slave cylinder is held in place by the bell housing and reguires it to be removed to replace the slave cylinder.

Slave Cylinder Questions

Hey Terry,
I've got a leaking clutch slave cylinder on my 1988 5-speed 4x4 ranger. Everything I can find tells me I've got to remove the transmission/bell housing to repair/replace the slave cylinder (which is sounds like you've done). It appears I'll need to drop the rear and front drive shafts, the transfer case, the cross member, and finally the transmission (supporting the engine when the tranny comes out). Are there any surprises or tips that you can give me based on your recent experience?
Thanks,
John

Let me think about that when I get home. My exhaust was shot so I cut it out an I am replacing it. I will post up later todau.

First off, if your truck did some time in the midwest be sure to have pb blaster or something ready. I could not get the rear yoke bolts loose on the rear drive shaft at the diff so I just took it loose from the transfer case and wired it up out of the way. My skid plate was already off so that was not an issue. The biggest pain in the ass was the two top trans bolts. I ended up pulling the top of the intake and the distributor. There is not much room around the bolts so make sure that you are fully engaged on the bolts before you loosen them. I went to harbor freight and bought one of the scissor type trans jacks, it helps a lot. Watch your pry bars around the trans, I broke the 4 x 4 switch. The cross member bolts were not tight as I thought they would be. I can add more if I think of it.
