i just found out that my old daily driver is a 88 high rider and i was thinking about swapping the transmission and transfercase into my 92 etd.cab ford ranger with a 4.0 and electric transfercase. i hate the tranfercase in the 92 and the 88 has a 1350 manual i drove this truck for 3 years and never had a problem with nothing except busted front axles and manual hubs and really would like to have the lower gears that the fm 146 has in first thru third. i know the 4.0 has more power that the old worn out 2.9 but after all the wheelin i done with the 88 i think the fm146 would hold up against the 4.0. but with what this site is i thought i would ask so more experinced hands about my idea. and yes i will post pics of the 92 and 88 mostly to just prove that i do have a 88 high rider and not just saying it.
Find ANY 2.3L or 3.0L M5OD and swap the gearset from it into your 4.0L's M5OD (unless you can find one of the rare 2.9L 4x4 M5ODs, in which case this just bolts right in). These M5ODs have ratios very similar to the FM145/146.
The 2.9 M5OD's are out there...I have one in my BII.
I agree with Junkie, the FM tranny is a bad idea, it will not hold up to the 4.0. If you want the lower gears, swap in the gearset from a 2.3 or 3.0 M5OD.
thx for the info i have a m5od out of a 2.3 so that might be aranged thanks for the info so what about the 1350 manual transfercase anyone think it is a good idea.
