Hey Guys,

Been along time, But finally i am able to contiune my swap.

Engine Swap: 96 Explorer 5.0L w/ wireing harness into a 94 Ranger 4.0L 4x4

Transmission: 96 F-150 M5R2 with a 97 Top cover & BW4406 Manual T-Case

Rear End: 96 Explorer 31 Spline w/ disc's

My question is regarding the flywheels and clutches. Essentailly whats the best combination? :icon_thumby: The guy at our local junk yard says i'm going to have alot of trouble finding something that will work with this combination.

Strange as when i review summit's part numbers for both the 96 Explorer 302 flywheel and the 96 M5R2 Flywheels, I get the same number PMS-M-6375-B302... 157 Tooth.. External Bal. for both engines

Am I missing something, or is he possibly refering to something else within clutch package that won't fit right.

thank you in advance

PS hey Mac :) the wiring isn't to to bad, Once it fires up (then i will turely know) I'll send ya all the info... and again thanks for all the help way back!!! those diagrams and everything were worth there weight in gold!

If that f150 trans uses a 157 tooth, then you're fine. Just remember, 50oz imbalance.

Thanks, I had a feeling I had nothing to worry about (besides the balance weight)

This combo would use a 164T 50-ounce imbalance flywheel with an 11" truck clutch and pressure plate. You would also need a manual starter which is different from the auto starter in the Ex 5.0. If you get all of these parts for a 96 F-150 5.0L or equivalent, they will fit this application.

The 96-back 4x4 R2 had a different extension housing compared to the later one that was used with the 97+ 4.2/4.6 and the BW4406. It also came with a different shift linkage for the BW1356 t-case. I don't know if either linkage will match up using a 96 R2 with a 4406.

An alternative is to use a 97~2003 R2 from a 4.2 V6 instead. The 4.2 R2 bolt pattern matches a 5.0 but needs the metric bolt holes enlarged very slightly to clear the 7/16" bolts that attach the trans to the 5.0 block. All of the 96 F150 clutch and starter parts mentioned above will work with this transmission and an Ex 5.0.

rwenzing really knows his stuff, and I don't question him.

But if both applications spec a 157 tooth flywheel/ or flex plate, you should have no issue. In my experience, the same starter is used for auto/manual. The difference is the bellhousing and dustshield locating the starter. As an example, my heap came out of a '92 Lincoln Mark VII LSc, an automatic AOD. But my trans/bellhousing/dustshield are from a '90 Mustang (T5), and the Lincoln starter works with no issues. (FWIW '92 and later are a mini-starter, gives a little more room, like the Explorer stuff.)

To finish my thought, if the F150 originally used the larger flywheel, the only reason you could not use the smaller one is starter reach. If you bolt the starter to the 'larger" belhousing, but use a 157 tooth flywheel, you just won't reach.

The 1996 F150 M5ODR2 and the EX 5.0 4R70W both use a 164T flywheel/flexplate but the starter nose lengths are different manual to automatic for these 5.0 trucks. (Ex 4R70W automatic is 2 3/8" vs. 2" on the manual R2).

Summit is one of my favorites but they don't get it right every time. Interesting that they specify 157T for the 5.0 Explorer - you can't do that unless you know which transmission bell is being used and the 5.0 Ex was never offered with any manual option from the factory.

That's awesome. I love an answer with an explanation!
Thank you, every time.

geeez rwening what do you charge per question you answer? lol
I don't know but if you look, there is no moderator for the V-8 section last time I looked. He has always come back with the right and proper answer without a cross word or anything like that. Jim, are you out there and listening? Could sure throw in a couple of other names.

First Thank you very much everyone,

I may have mis-read my own directions :) hahaha i need to stop working and focus on my truck ha i wish...

I reviewed my parts: I messed up...

Transmission: 96 F-150 M5R2 with a 97 Top cover & "BW4406 Manual T-Case" <-- this is in-correct, I have a BW1356 Manual Shift from a 95 F-150.

Therefore,

A 164T 50-ounce imbalance flywheel with an 11" truck clutch and pressure plate for 96- F-150 should work. shift linkages are different (97+ vs 96-) but since i'm using a reg combo (96 to a 95) it should be okay.

What throw me off from summit's 157T was the additional comments saying it could be used with a 5.0 Mustang????? and i couldn't figure that one out..

i'll check the starter noses and take a pic, I was luckey and got the whole explorer (with a 120,000KM on the engine :).... very luckey)

should read the whole thread. a 1356 will indeed fit but its a matter of compromise.

what oil pan are you using? the ttb trucks require a fox type of pan or modded truck pan with a stock ttb x member

Thanks bobbywalter, ya i've read on other fourms they do fit, with some work. my old man works at a wrecker so i'll pull both and see what i want to do... i'm heading down there today...

As for a pan, i've grabbed a dual sump pan from a mustang this should work.

Thanks alot everyone!

Any progress yet?
