I took my motor out, need to remove the flywheel. The engine keeps turning over. How can I stop the motor from turning over to loosen the bolts?

If an impact wrench Isn't available, I've had good luck with rubber mallets. A good whack to the wrench will normally loosen the bolt, without turning the engine over.

Thank's. I'll try that one and see how it goes. I keep putting a breaker bar on the crankshaft bolt, but it just keeps breaking loose.

EDIT: That didn't work. The motor still turned over. I'll just see if I can borrow an impact from someone.

Sorry. I use big rubber hammers all the time and they usually get the job done. You could drill and bolt a long piece of flat iron in 2 of the pressure plate bolt holes to hold it from turning. I've also had good luck with big c-clamps on the flywheel.

Get a friend to hold the crank bolt.

There is a flywheel holding tool. I had the same problem years back. I broke down and bought it. It was years back, but I think it was cheap.

This is where an impact gun is handy. I don't have one, so I have a 16" long cold chisel that I wedged into the ring gear. A fly wheel holder is a piece of flat stock or angle you can bolt in place to jam it. If there is nothing to jam against , then put some thing there. Use your imagination. In the infantry, they are known as field expedients. :D

When I did mine i took a pair of those giant vice grips like you use for welding clamps and gripped the harmonic balancer with them. Then slipped a cheater pipe on them and slid the extended vice grip assembly under my work bench and took out the flywheel bolts. Wasn't hard you just have to be creative. I had the same problem with the bolt in the harmonic balancer coming loose.

I presume you have the engine bolted to an engine stand for this.

Position the engine so that you can rest a breaker bar on the crank bolt in such a way that when you try to loosen the flywheel, the crank wrench will bind against something, stopping the engine from turning, allowing you to remove the flywheel.

AKA the "get a friend to hold the crank bolt... without a friend" method. When you go to loosen the flywheel, do so slowly to avoid sending a jolt through the drivetrain which may pop the breaker bar off. Go slowly until you feel it binding then put some torque into it.
