I have a 1991 ranger and i rebuild my a4ld in january put the tranny in and in the end of febuary it quit on me i recently found out that the bolds on the flywheel to the crank fell out. has anyone ever herd of something like that happening it was new to me. anyways is there anyway to fix this problem easy or do i have to pull the tranny for sure? Its a 4X4 by the way so the t-case is what is making me want to find a easyer way. any info would be great thank you

brendan

u have to pull iether the tranny or the motor, and put em back in, make sure u torque them down, and if its a softer bolt the bolts will bust in half, 40 ft-lbs should be fine

The transfer case is easy to remove, so don't let that stop you. You will have to unbolt the trans and at least slide it back out of the way to check things out.

When tightening the flex plate bolts torque them to the factory spec and it would be wise to use medium (red) thread locker since you had a problem with them loosening.

If you are not sure that it's loosened bolts, you may have a broken flex plate and/or spacer hub. It would give you roughly the same symptoms as loose bolts. You should also check the torque converter to flex plate bolts and use thread locker on them also.:icon_cheers:

well now that i looked closer at it and talked around with a couple ford mechanics they told me its most likely that i need a new flywheel because the bolts would not have backed out on there own and there isn't enough room. i know how to pull the tranny ive had it out twice and its a fairly big job and even bigger when the truck is on stands on the shop floor i know how to pull the t case and every thing i just though there might be a easier way to do it thats all. But if i rember right you cant slid the tranny back you have to drop it

thanks

I had a leaking slave cylinder on my 89 Ranger and was able to slide the trans back enough to replace it without dropping the trans completely. This was after removing the transfer case. Worked on my 4x4, maybe other years are different.

I have a flex plate and spacer hub if yoy find out yours are damaged. Good luck.:icon_cheers:

ok i have a automatic 91 and im thinking the spacer hub may not be in there would i have had to put it between the torque converter and flywheel or what? I never pulled the tranny out personally some one else did the final pull for me becuase i was busy and they had some time to help so maybe im missing the spacer hub then

The spacer hub fits onto the crank flange, and then the flex plate is put on and the bolts are slid through both the flex plate and spacer hub and tightened. Don't forget the medium (blue) thread locker on the bolts. Check both the flex plate and spacer hub CAREFULLY for cracks before installing them.:icon_thumby:

well i probably will go and try to buy new parts rather then used everytime i get used stuff its exactly that used and wore out

As long as the starter teeth on the flex plate are good and there are no cracks on the spacer hub and flex plate, used parts should be as good as new. Most Rangers go through their whole life with the original hub and flex plate.

I'd guess that the dealer price for these parts new (if they are even available) will curl your toes.

you have no idea i have a rare mazda car i had to buy parts through Europe just to get a stupid break line shipping costs alone were too much but it was new and made my system good again so if i buy new they have warrenty on them so thats good plus i got a pretty good discount at the local piston ring (part shop) so i think i will be alright. and they are available i already found out.

This is off topic cocoasranger but you said you did an upgrade to your clutch master. I put a shift kit in my automatic A4LD and i have to say that it made a world of difference my dad has a turboed VW and we were at a stop light i pinned her and boom i was gone.. Im also running 265/75/15 tires on that sucker man 4x4 is great now. i put a 2 inch lift not that big of a deal but with those tires on it wow.

and to do with buying parts i got a 80/20 deal going 80% of the paycheck goes to gas and parts for toys... 20% bills my girlfriend told me if I spent as much time with her as i did my cars we'd be happy..... i still got my toys

the flywheel was completely ripped appart pulled the tranny replaced flywheel and starter running good now did the stereo all up and drivin her again its all good
