ok i have a 94 ranger with a i believe mazda trans waht fliud does it take? ATF or 90W? thanks

M5R1 = Gear Lube. I've got High miles on mine so i use a a heavy 90-140W, I think, not a 100% on the weight though. But that sounds right. The weight will really depend on ur millage and ur enviroment (hot or cold weather).

NOOOO!!! Gear oil in a M5OD is a fantastic way to burn it up. It uses ATF!!

The M50D uses a needle bearing for the input shaft, using gear oil starves the tiny little needles. The PO of my Ranger was running some sort of molasses in my trans. I flushed it out a time or two and I ran regular Mercon in it for a while but the bearing was noisy when sitting in neutral. I drained it and refilled with full synthetic Mercon and it quieted it down a bit.

isnt a mazda tranny a manual?? why would you use ATF in a manual, ive always used 80/90 gear lube and never had problems.

Yes, it's a manual, and yes - ATF is the correct lubricant. Gear oil does not flow well enough to adequately lubricate some of the bearings. It was designed from the ground up for ATF.

The Mitsubishi transmission required gear lube but I think the last Ranger to use that was the 2.9L 4WD. There may have been some 2WD 2.9L Rangers that used a different version of the Mitsubishi also.
