Flipped, now won't turn over.

As the title says, I flipped my B2 (I'm fine, not a scratch). It was laying on the passenger side primarily, up against a tree with all 4 wheels clearing the ground. It was probably upside down for 30-45 minutes. I remember shutting it off, so it was still running once I was over, but probably not more than a 10-15 seconds.

It won't turn over now though. The next day, when I tried to start it, it seemed like the engine turned and then stopped, like it hit something. I put a new starter on it 4 days before. It didn't lose much oil, a quart at the very most. I have put the charger on the battery and it still wouldn't go. I had to leave to come to college, but my brother and grandpa have tried to pull start it with a tractor, but the wheels just slid.

A mechanic friend thinks that oil may have slipped past the rings or something and fill the cylinder(s), which won't compress with that in there. They plan to pull the spark plugs and try it. Is that a possibility?

I wouldn't think the main bearings would burn up in just a few seconds, as it was still running until I turned the key off. What else could it be? Thanks..

just a possibility but have you checked the fuel pump inertia switch?

Yep, likely inertia switch. It's in the passenger footwell, just below the top of the carpet.

Wow. Sorry guys, but I think you guys are all missing the boat here. He said it won't turn over, not won't fire.
The FIRST thing you do after a rollover is pull ALL the sparkplugs and crank it over. If you have oil in a cylinder and tried starting it like you said, and heard it lock up, you most likely have a bent rod now.

Pull the sparkplugs, see if you can crank it over, and go from there. If you can't even get it to turn over then, even with a socket on the crank pulley if you doubt the starter, then most likely you're motor is toast. :icon_thumby:

Thanks Loanranger and others. I had thought about the switch and will check it out if problems arise. If I did bend a rod, how would I know? Would it move at all or just run out of balance or something?

It would miss and generally not run well at all.

Last time my fuel inertia switch tripped on me, it wouldn't turn or fire. A little flag popped out of the visor saying "dumbass" when I tried to crank it.

I dont think the starter has the torque to bend a rod.

Normally rods get bent when the engine is running and a liquid (like water) fills the cylinders.

You say it landed on the passenger side? Just a piss shot in the dark....but your fender solenoid didnt sustain any damage did it? The battery i believe is also on that side....

Id try turning it by hand and see what you come up with....

Here's an update guys. My dad and brother worked on it a little today. They pulled all of the plugs. Five had a little oil on them, the last (passenger, rear) was soaked with oil. They got it too turn over and said it spun just fine using the starter with the plugs out. They didn't get around to putting the plugs back in.

So does that mean I'm in the clear?
Do I need to replace the plugs or can I just clean and reuse them?

this isnt necessarily true. i have watched a few blocks blow apart from the starter, depends on engine.

in this case, it sounds like it never fired so i do think you may be fine. like rusty said usually the starter wont hurt heavier engines..what does it isone cylinder kicks and its force bends the rod.

one thing i have done when rod damage was in question before firing it up was dowel test the cylinders to make sure travel was real close

i make a tool from a old plug by hallowing it out and make sure eash piston stokes the same with a cut to needed length dowel rod or use a srewdriver or whatever is pretty tight

if they are good then run it....or just fire it up and see what it does..

bobbywalter, could you explain the dowel test a little more?

You are saying to put something through an old plug to measure how far the piston travels, correct? I assume you would have to turn it over by had for this to work right.

I believe a friend of mine said to do a compression check before trying to start it. Is that necessary or just cautious?

sorry been away.

yes, to the old plug...a wood length of dowel. compression tests cold dont always tell the story correctly so i do a dowel...or screwdriver...just depends on the situation.

generally speaking if it cranks nice and smooth and noise free with the plugs out, you can put the plugs in and do a short test run....just fire it off and turn it off, if it sounds ok then likly your good to go drown er in oil again:icon_thumby:
