Flip diff housing or passenger drop tcase?

I've recently got a 2003 ford pickup with a toyota straight axle conversion. The pumpkin is on the wrong side. Would it be easier to flip the diff housing or build a passenger drop tcase? Any help will be appreciated
 
You can't flip the axle over, it will want to go the other way. I have heard of people doing that for demo derbies so they get three or four reverse gears.

Either get an axle with the diff on the correct side (left or drivers side) or I am afraid you are going to beat your head against the wall turning up a PS drop t-case that will bolt on a RBV transmission.

Jeep ZJ D30's are a pretty decent option for a stockish truck.

I am not that familiar with yota axles, it may be possible to have it cut apart and reassembled so it is reversed. That smells like a lot of $$ to me though.

For your other post you will either need to get the tail end and output shaft off of a 4x4 trans or a 4x4 trans from a similar engine family, there are three. four cylinder, 3.0 and 2.8/2.9/4.0.

It would be possible if you have a 2.8/2.9/4.0 to mix and match parts from a RBV C5 and a fullsize C4 to get a trans you could bolt to your truck and bolt a generic fullsize case on off of say a GM to get your PS drop. It is a lot of running around to get a 3 speed trans and a PS diff though.
 
Pre 1980 sj Jeeps used a passenger drop 208 TC . IIRC Fords used the 208 as well.
 
I would sell that toyota axle and get something thats actually useful to you, like a d30 or d44.

Any of the options available sound like way too much money, work, or both.
 
if it is 'yota it is likely 6 lug, a d30 it will be drivers drop, with the same width and bolt pattern as your rear diff

so long story short, I also vote for jeep d30

Didn't even think about the part where the yota axle will be a 6-bolt pattern...

Only one more reason to say sell that sucka for a d30 or d44. (d44 is different too, but you can get a 8.8 to match the bolt pattern on it.)
 
Someone wasn't thinking when they did that conversion, probably why they sold it..
 
if you REALLY wanted to use the axle you already have, you would have to cut both knuckles off at the weld to the housing, remove the housing and flip it around along with keeping the pumpkin in it's current orientation (top stays top), add a new oil drain port, relocate the leaf spring pads, insert and align the knuckles on their new side of the axle then reattach.

It would be a lot of work, but so would making a transfer case fit...

if a person was hell-bent on using a passenger side drop axle, the only realistic/not-a-waste-of-time option would be to do a v8 swap at the same time, and use a PRE-IFS chevy powertrain.

the simplest is still D30. the best would be to get a d60, have it narrowed, and have custom outers to keep your stock bolt pattern. but cost/difficulty would be high on that route.

you could also do FW front/rear swaps. which could give you stronger axles, and matching front/rear bolt patterns. all with jy parts
 
^^ yeah, nobody mentioned ATLAS yet. That works too

a narrowed/re-drilled D60 would cost less than an Atlas though

somehow I think Snoranger was joking though :icon_confused:
