alright so i have a 2008 2.3l ford ranger with 140 hp and 3.73's
i wanna lift it and ive decided for sure either 32's or 33's
and what i wanted to know was,
about how much power will i lose with that size tire? without upgrading my gears..
and btw, its going to be my DD so i need enough power to get to highway speeds
thanks guys,
eric

Depends on the tire, if you get a heavy tire like a TSL SX then your truck will be a slug. If you get something lighter like an BFG A/T then it wont be bad, but still very very slow. Iv got a 4.0L V6 with 4.10s and 35s and my truck is slow! A regearing would definitely be in your future.

yeah i was thinking about the bf a/t's
do you think ill at least be able to hit 75-80 on the freeway?

and do you think ill be at least somewhat quick?
like at least 0-50 in under or about 10 seconds? haha
cuz right now my 4 banger is 0-60 in about 5 secs. shes pretty peppy
and everything is stock..
thanks again
eric

I doubt you will be able to do 70mph and probably looking about a 12+ second 0-60. If it is a manual you will be much better off than an automatic as those use the toothed gear in your rearend to determine speed and shift points and when you get bigger tires without changing the gears to match, then your shift points will be off. I can still do 90+ in my truck but she doesnt like it...but now my commute is only 10 miles! You can always get the tires and everything see how it goes and if its too slow, then you can regear later.

ps V6 rangers are nowhere near a 0-60 in 5 seconds.

thanks, and i met 0-50 not 60..but whatever..and yeah its automatic =[
will getting 32's make that much of a difference over getting 33's?
thanks again for all your help
eric

i dont know if you have already gotten the tires yet but i have the same truck as you but in a manual and am trying to do the exact same thing as your looking to do and with 32's or 33's your rig will be slower than shit and you'll have to get a lift for it to so they dont rub.

You are definitely going to need deeper gears, 4.10 minimum. 4.56 would be a better bet especially with your 4 banger.

Personally I would go with the 33's. I have had both 32's and 33's and used 32's are literally impossible to find if you trash one. 33's are everywhere.

My TwoBits

For my job, I carry alot of weight in my rangR's. So, I exagerate any problems anyone else may face. My 1st one was a 2.5L and it flat taught me P A T I E N C E. My next rangR was 3.0L, but now 4wd and still gettn heavier. It started with 235/75/15 (29" diameter) and 3.73:1 gears. Barely liveable. Then I went to 31" tires. Painfull. Changed to 4.10 gears. Back to liveable, and the speedometer is nearly normal too.

Anyway, Um, The moral to my rambling story is: what ever performance you have now, it will decrease proportionally with a corresponding increase in tire size. Unless you compensate with an equal increase in gear ratio. (Im sure you Einstine's out there have an equation for this.)
