First time on forum

Hi there, I have a 3.0L V6 1996 2WD Ranger and the engine is running a bit rough. So I want to swap it. I was wondering if anyone had experience in putting a 1988 5.0L V8 HO(or similar) into a 1996 2WD (or similar)? Any tips? Is it too much work? Is it worth it? Do I have to change out transmission too?
