For anyone who missed my original thread, I bought my first ranger at a farm auction and it had sat for 15 years. I finally got the 86 XL on the road yesterday! The suspension, brakes, and steering were surprisingly good! Good oil pressure, ran cool. It was great to have it rolling again.

Two things: Still running rough, despite full tune up, surges frequently, and even stalled while cruising on the highway (luckily re-started in neutral)!
I have to run the ECM tests again, but I was getting an 02 sensor code and an EGR sensor code - replaced the 02 sensor. Could the EGR/sensor cause a rich condition, and rough running? I thought maybe I'd take it on a few highway runs and see if I can blow anything out, and run a tank of good gas through it (and fuel injector cleaner).

Exhaust - what a pain. The cats are good, the tailpipe is good, the midpipe and muffler were toast. Trying to get this thing on the road as cheaply as possible, I was going to put some flexi pipe between the cat and tail. But with the rich condition, I was seeing smoke coming out under the hood. The gasket between the downpipe and the cats was shot, so I swapped it out. Unfortunately, it's still leaking, the flanges must be warped or nicked up. Should I put two gaskets on there? Is it worth it to use that exhaust sealant in a tube crap? Because of that two-into-one setup, I can't easily cut off the flange and make duals or something. Any creative ideas?

Thanks!

Tom

Those flanges are a pain. The ONLY Thing that worked for me was to use two gaskets and about half a tube of copper high temp silicone sealant! Good stuff...

Tell me about it. Was thinking about cutting both pipes and running turns up through the bed like dual diesel stacks. Hate exhaust.

Just noticed I posted this on the 2.8 forum, not 2.9. Sorry.
