Im in the process of installing a timing belt...the funny thing is that Im having trouble getting tdc. I hear that you dont have to remove the spark plugs then I hear that you have to remove all the spark plugs on one side and I also hear that I should just remove one spark plug from #1 cylinder. So basically whats the correct way...thanks! :icon_confused:

remove plugs so you can turn engine easier. If you leave them in it is harder to turn when they are on the compression stroke.

You can stick a rag of finger in cylinder 1 and when it pops out you are close to TDC and just line up the marks. Should be one on the bottom with the crankshaft pulley and one on the top. I can not remeber but there are 2 marks i think do a search for it.

the cam will probably sit with the valves at least somewhat open(at least one or two), if you turn it slowly with a ratchet, compression will leak by anyway...

I just finished replacing the timing belt on my 96 2.3. 1.remove the #1 plug, turn crank until the key is at 12 oclock and you can see the piston is up(look into the plug hole with a light.2.align the oil pump sprocket mark to the diamond on the inside cover,it is at 6 oclock.3. Align the cam sprocket to the triangle at 5 oclock. Be careful not to let the sprockets turn when installing the belt. After releasing the tensioner, turn the engine a couple of times to make sure the marks are to their marks.tighten both bolts to the correct torque, and install the crank pulley. P.S. be sure to check the crank sensor for damage if your timing belt broke.
