Finally pulling the drivetriain! Pics added as I progress!

as far as the hydraulic line going on, is the slave new? if not and it came with the donor tranny, what year did it come from? they changed the slaves, master cylinder and clutch line after '92, but it looks like you have the plastic slave which should be the newer style... just throwing that stuff out there

Glad to see everything back together
how did the slave cyl turn out I`d wrap that sucker in something
so if you need to take it back off it won`t be so hard.
I took mine to work today 32 miles round trip
do you think i should re tork the bolts ?

I've gotten my last three clutch kits from AutoZone because I ended up buying the lifetime kit and anytime I have to pull the tranny I just go down there and get the "whole enchilada". Slave cylinder, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, clutch disc, and pressure plate........FREE!!! Believe it or not I don't have any problems with them even though they are'nt "genuine Ford parts".The only thing I need to do is have the flywheel resurfaced, though it did'nt need it this time.

Well, I thought I was done but it looks like I'm going to need to remove my tailshaft on the transmission and swap it out with my old one because the new one does'nt have the VSS (speed) sensor in it. Looks like I can do it with the tranny still installed though so that'll save me some serious time!

Here's the pics of what I mean:
Here's the old one

Allen the fluid ran out on me to and it was cold but it was my fault cause I didn`t have enough room to put the fluid back in and not the right funnel did you get alot of metal on your drain plug?
Greg

preflight:
yes I got the hydraulic line into the slave........finally after about three valiant attempts. I still don't know why it was so hard but at least it's done now.

scotts90ranger:
yes the slave cylinder is brand spanking new because I got a lifetime clutch and slave cylinder deal when they had them at AutoZone a few years ago. I've learned my lesson already about not changing "EVERYTHING" while you're in there.

My only problem now still remains that tailshaft.

Yeah, I had metal on the drain plug, but not as bad as I suspected. What do you mean, the reservoir? Did you get it bled properly?

Allen

I took the master slave cyl resivour and brought it all down in one piece
that way no air.
aw the fluid ran out the tailshaft ,ran out of the fill point my one piece is soaked
it was so cold I couldn`t feel the bottle, and now after I clear the driveway of snow
I have a transfer case to put into my wifes Explorer.

Aah man, that's too bad. I guess I'm lucky it's not cold like that over here. at least you can't feel it as bad when you white knuckle it. J/K.

After driving the Ranger for about an hour the CEL ended up coming on and sure enough it was a code for the VSS. Code P0500. Guess I'm trading tailshafts huh?

Allen

Just an update post guys!

Man O Man is this thing running great!

I replaced the tailshafts and now my speedo's working again and the CEL has stayed off! I'm very happy with the work I did.........................AND there's not a drop of fluid to be found coming out of my Ranger now! YAAAY!

One more thing to do though to make this a 100% done deal, and that's my power steering pump. Either way that will be done tomorrow. I think it's water in there.

Feels like a new truck again guys!

Allen

Great job, Allen. That little 4 banger is going to be good for another 370K now. Ball joints are a breeze in your truck. It'll take you about an hour to change all 4. While you're in there, check the drag link too. WHen you're all done, you can celebrate with a little tequila LOL

Thanks guys.

But can you believe there's a small leak under the tranny at the seal I replaced on the tailshaft!

I just replaced it, it's brand new!

Still, other then that there's no leaks, I just went out to check again....lol.

Allen

when you put the new seal in did you use a little rtv around the outside of it between it and the tranny?

No, I did'nt use any silicone. Are you talking about the actual metal sleeve part? Was I supposed too? Thanks.

Allen

yea, alot of times with those seals its a good idea to use a little rtv on the actual metal sleeve around the outside of it where it meets the transmission. Just like doing a pinion seal, you use a little RTV around the outside of it where it meets the diff and with a pinion you also use a little rtv on the yoke splines so it doesnt leak out of those, you dont need to do that for the tranny though, the splines arent exposed with the slipp on the drivershaft.
