Finally pulling the drivetriain! Pics added as I progress!

Went out and bought the seal for the oil pump shaft and the spark plugs today. This is the quickest I've ever changed out spark plugs on this engine, only because I have very easy access. I put the timing belt back on, the alternator, the lower intake plenum, spark plugs, oil pump seal, and the coil packs. I had to take a little time and clean out the intake manifold because it was terrrible! The EGR was totally plugged so I had to take care of that as well. I'll be making all the gaskets tonight and get it to where all I need to do tomorrow is install new plug wires after I drop her in.

I just had to go buy some zip ties so I can get all the wiring organized. She'll finally be in tomorrow and don't see why I should'nt have it up and running.

I could see this was probably one of the spots that was leaking oil!

Thanks.

I kind of had to remove the engine because it was just so oily I could'nt really tell where the leaks were from anymore. The engine has to be removed anyhow to change out the oil pan gasket, or at least jacked up off of the mounts. That's why I opted to do the entire lower end gasket set. Your motor probably was'nt as dirty as mine and I bet your back on the road already.

So how did it go today changing out that seal? Was it hard and did it stop the oil leak? Thanks.

Allen

As I said, it a royal pain to get to the seal, but easy enough to change out. As for weather it fixed the leak or not, I'll have to drive it for a few days. I have a personally problem with leaky engines. So my engine has never dripped a drop of oil before until just a few days ago. And as for it being clean, yep, I wash under the hood too. Simple Green and a garden hose go a long ways to keep an engine clean.

Just a FYI, I've checked my manitance log. Last time I worked on the Ranger was back on April 28, 2007. Not bad really being as stricted as I am. 2003-2006 were my busiest years for fixing something. I hope 2008 will be the same, just the oil changes and tire rotations.

I used to do it religiously too, then I don't know what happened. For some reason I just got too busy or did'nt feel like dealing with it. I'm feeling like getting her back up to par now though.

The next thing on my "to do" list with her will probably be rebuilding the front end. There's some slop there and I think it has something to do with the 370,000 miles I have on her with the original ball joints, tie rod ends, bushings, and basically everything else up there.

Then after she needs nothing else mechanically, I'll start looking for body shops and do the interior items myself.

Keep me posted thought on how your front seal came out please, want to know if it's still leaking. I'm curious. Mine was a "Fel-Pro" seal was yours?

Allen

everything turned out great took it for a short drive around the block (expired temp tags) how is your project going

I used a Fel-Pro gasket for the valve cover. As with everything else, I go to the dealership and get the motorcraft parts. I only want to do the job once. So I go with OEM parts.

Smart. I did'nt even think about the dealer for gaskets or seals. Probably would of been an arm and a leg though there for what I needed.

Allen

If your still leaking even after a new fel-pro gasket you did the job wrong. Sorry to say it but its not the gasket. Id trust fel-pro over anything. Never once failed me.

Allen are you up and running ?
I know time is hard to come by but I wish I could do what you did
looks like you did a realy good job on it.
this spring Im going to take the bed and cab off and de- rust the frame
,my engine oil covered to never been press washed lol but thoes parts won`t rust

No sorry guys, I'm not done with her yet. I took a couple days off and to make a long story short:

I ended up drinking an entire bottle of "Cabo Wabo" tequila with my 19 year old daughter and some friends. I had the worst hangover yesterday which is why I have'nt touched my Ranger for two days. I'm not going to drink for A LONG time. I'm still not all the way back up to par, but I'm feeling good enough to finish my truck.

Michowski, I don't think it's going to leak anymore. All the gaskets are brand new and installed exactly how the manual said. If I do have a problem with it I'll be sure to post up though. I just don't see that happening.

I'll post up pics tonight of it done and sorry for the delay guys! It was fun at first until I started puking my guts out. Sounded like a good idea at the time...hahaha. Later.

Ok, ready to put the motor back in but I just want to change out the pilot bearing before I do. I don't have the tool to do it so I'm wondering if there's any other way to remove it without the tool. That trick you guys told on how to drill a small hole in the rear main seal and pry it out worked like a charm. Thanks guys! Put the new plug wires and main seal in and finished up the rest of the intake and EGR.

If anyone knows how to get the pilot bearing out without the tool PLEASE let me know. Thanks.

Ok well just FYI, I thought I'd post up where silicone "IS NEEDED" on a 2.3 or a 2.5 when replacing the oil pan gasket. IT WILL LEAK IF YOU DO NOT PUT SILICONE IN THESE SPOTS!!
Allen

I was waiting for someone to backup that superstition of mine. They say the same thing for the 4.6L timing cover ... ie. anywhere two faces meet.

Michowski: I'm pretty sure I'd know I did it wrong if it still leaked after I replaced all the gaskets, but thanks buddy.....lol.

Ok, the motor's finally back in but I still need to put the trans in tomorrow. I've got all new plug wires, plugs, good filter, new (to me) tranny, thing should run good and be leak free now. The engine's slightly tilted in the pic because the tranny is'nt in yet. I wish it would be done already, between my wife's doctor appointments and my wild hair I should have been done already. Here's where she's at now:

Well, just installed the tranny. The guy I bought it from told me it was dry but when I lifted it all the fluid ran out on me. Oh well, at least it's in now. I'll get back out there in an hour or so and install the driveshaft and reconnect the exhaust to the header. Then I'll fill'er up with fluids and she how she runs. Later.

Allen

Everything's installed now except for the stupid hydraulic clutch line. The darn thing just does'nt want to go in! I'm going to put on a set of work gloves and go to town right now. Wish me luck, that's the only thing holding me up now. Well I still have to put the tranny fluid in but that's it, the interior shift lever and all the other fluids are in.

True. Its only stuff that needs to be done once. The bill was $443.53 w/ tax. But thats for a front & rear main seal, clutch kit, slave cylinder, and timing belt. The timing belt alone ran $62.76.

If you do get the pilot bearing out, please do post it. I'm planning on doing my clutch on the next weekend that I don't work on.

Edit: I missed the 2nd page.
Your clutch parts look different from the ones I got from Ford. My clutch disc has 4 springs and the pressure plate looks a lot different. And on the slave cylinder, mine has a rubber boot over the center spring. Where did you get your clutch kit from?
