i've gone really deep into thought when I was planning my box and developed a formula to find the available mounting depth at any given point lol... maybe i'm just influenced by my calculus teacher


although the mounting depth on my *kenwood* (think i called it a pioneer before... it was probably late, at least i hope it was lol) sub is only 3 5/16.. i might still use your box. it might be a little bit boomy though, i like to listen to some techno and rock as well as rap, so the boom is good for the rap, but i want some punch for my techno and rock as well.

kenwood (brand of my sub) has a suggested enclosure diagram for my sub...

i am like really considering ported for some reason after looking at the graphs... there isn't a huge difference, besides that it responds at low frequencies at a lower dB and has a higher response (in dB) at higher frequencies


basically the range of the ported enclosure is approx 72.5 db - 94 db

and the range of the sealed enclosure is approx 74db - 90 db


how much harder is a ported box to make? i mean it seems easy enough like I just buy PVC tubing, and stick it in a hole in the side of the box and bam done... but things are never that easy.

There is a noticeable sound difference, it depends on what you like, I listen to a LOT of techno, and electronic, so i like the sound of sealed. IMO ported boxes are for people that ONLY listen to rap/hip-hop/newish pop, for anything else you want to hear the bass more then feel it, meaning you want sealed.

also IMO/experience there is no "shelf life" for a box.

If your feeling kinky, and for shifts and giggles, you could try to find a clean-out cap the right size and make a hybrid box, sealed for day to day, ported for the days you want to go deaf early.

obviously it's a slim mount 12" in a truck box... i'm not expecting the effect of 4 12's in a bandpass box.... but you know i like to feel it, but also like to hear it.... just looking for my best bet i guess.



the only downside is even if i try sealed, and want to listen to it ported, there's no way of going back lol.... at least not without ruining the integrity of the box

The mounting depth for the 10" kickr cvr is 5-5/16" thats why it is so big. I had to remove the arm rest to fit it, but it is WWWWAAAAYYYY worth it because the box is amazing with techno and rap. I cant hear myselt think with the sub turned up half way. Im gonna catch crap, but I have seen many systems, but this sub box combination sounds better than my friends 2 RF punches 12" in his explorer.

A clean-out cap is a cap that is used pluming, for when your drain plugs up you remove the clean-out cap to clean out the drain.

Ported will "shake" the truck a lot more then sealed will.

Because your so on the fence, go down to your local Home Depot, or hardware store, and find someone who knows there stuff, ask them about getting a 2-3 foot peace of 3" (I think check the owners manual before you go) and tell them you also want a clean out cap for it but it has to be air tight.

Before you go doin that stuff at home depot, You need to calculate the length and the width of the port. Depending on what type of music you listen to, you need to tune your box to a certian freequency so it will sound good.

Also with the clean out cap, Ported boxes and sealed boxes have different reccomended and maximum cubic footage. So just putting the plug in would make it not sound very good.

also, so if i was just doing a ported enclosure, the tube would be x inches long... but if i have that female part on there, without the male part screwed into it (because the male part seals off the tube), then do i shorten the port tube by the length of the female part so that the port tube isn't too long?

like say the port tube is supposed to be 10"... and the female part is 2" long, do i get an 8" piece of pvc and put insert that, and then the female part sits right outside the box in total creating 10"?? or do i still just do 10" of pvc along with the female part?

Yes.
Yes, you'll have to slip it on the pipe, and measure how much you'll need to shorten the pipe, oh and make sure you use an adhesive to mate the two parts together when you are ready to install.
