Everything works in my tranny except 5th gear wont engage makes a funny clicking noise instead any Idea why????? Anyone??

'Cause it's broken?

What kind of answer are you looking for?

No, there are no faults whatsoever that can remove 5th gear without requiring you to open up the transmission.

I need to know if it is a gear gone bad or if it is the shift forks or maybe the sync's or what could make fifth gear not work....

I know you don't want to hear this, but if you have the thing hanging open and you still can't figure out how it works, this is over your head.

That's how one LEARNS how it works -- take the cover and extension off.

If it wasn't over my head u think I would be on here asking? Probably not I'm getting a new one I wont to know what to look for as I take this one apart so that I will know in the future so that maybe just maybe I dont have to get on here and ask a question that I guess is just to stupid for some dick to answer.

Punctuation por favor.

Have you replaced your motor/ tranny mounts? I had the same problem on my 92 SE-R, (except not as many times as you have) and according to a Nissan tech bad motor mounts will cause strain on the shift linkage and 5th gear assy to wear out prematurly. Causing the dreaded 5th gear pop out. I had to replace my mounts every 30,000 miles since I was very hard on the gas on that car I sure wish I still had it....

Hope it helps. :taunt:

Thanks for giving me something I can actually look for and maybe use..

Too bad it's wrong.

The transmission bellhousing is BOLTED to the engine block with 6 or 8 bolts (depending on model) and there is NO way an engine mount is going to affect that. The engine block, transmission case, and bolts are ALL FAR more rigid than any engine mount aside from a solid aluminum or steel block.

And the shift linkage doesn't depend at all on any mount. The stick goes DIRECTLY into the top of the transmission; the entire linkage is within the transmission case and cover.

This diagnosis simply cannot be done over the Web, as much as you might want it to. You need someone to manhandle the guts of your transmission.

just incase anyone else might have a question about fifth gear in the fm145

This is for anyone who has a problem with fifth gear not working and they dont know why siince there are some people on this site that think they are to smart to answer a question with a simple this could be your problem answer. If you go to www.drivetrain.com/transilltfm145.html and click on the parts list scroll down past the parts list and read the paragraph it tells you a very good reason that the fifth gear doesnt work. It seems that the fm145 seems to have a problem with fifth gear going out anyways and there is a really cheap and farely easy way to fix the problem.

Well, you might get lucky with their wild guess (which it is), but it's very much in their interest for you to go on wild goose chases. You have to buy stuff from them.

Your transmission is broken the way it is broken. It may or may not conform to someone's preconceived ideas.

FYI, FM145s often develop a 5th gear whine from towing in OD or not fixing oil leaks, but that doesn't explain not going into 5th. There are several parts in the synchronizer assembly and linkages that might do that. And whether this transmission is repairable depends upon what ELSE is wrong with it. With the problem these guys describe, if you've lost 5th, you have teeth all over the case and a ruined mainshaft. Do you? Another possibility is that you broke the dog teeth off the 5th gear. Or just that end clearance is so wide that the synchronizer won't grab. Or maybe a synchronizer key popped out. And so on.

NO ONE can inspect your transmission over the web. You're rolling the dice with someone's guess.
