about a month ago my clutch shit itself, it worked fine and then when i got home i pulled into a parking space, went to shift into reverse and it wouldnt go in, no grinding, just wouldnt go, tried every other gear and none of them worked either.

turned the engine off and it shifts fine,

replaced throwout bearing, bled clutch, still wouldn't go into gear while running,

clutch slave looks brand new. and i was told by the previous owner that it was replaced around x-mas,

thinking its the master cylinder,

i fully gravity bleed the entire system again tonight, rather than spending more unneeded time and money on it, but when i went to start it up and test it, the starter was grinding, i loosened the bolts, wiggled it around and tried tightening the bolts down, only to find the bolts wont tighten because the threads are stripped, and wont hold the starter tight enough to crank the motor before slipping.

any suggestions on how to fix this problem, as well as any insight on my clutch issues?




CLIFF NOTES:

clutch not disengaging (wont go into gear w engine running)
replaced throwout bearing, THROUGHLY gravity bled clutch,
slave has less than 2000 mi on it
threads in bellhousing for starter are srtipped and wont hold tight enough to start.
tight budget,

suggestions?


truck is an 88 ranger ST-X
2.9, 4x4, 5spd trans (Mitsubishi, as far as i can tell)

Helicoil repair for the starter bolt threads.

Slave / Master is a toss up, I'd bet on a bad slave though.

im hoping its the master, its cheaper and easier to replace,... and that trans is a PITA to drop. and i dont know why i didnt think of a helicoil kit,... guess im too tired for this right now,...

I would lean towards master, but check inside your bellhousing through view port for brake fluid. After you replace master or slave, watch the videos..your gravity bleed wont cut it.

so, installed helicoils in the starter threads so that problem is fixed,... im just going to spend about $200 this weekend and replace both cylinders and the lines, if that dont fix it,... anyone want an 88 st-x?

make sure the trans is not loose where it bolts to the eng. It will screw with the starter and clutch too if it is.
