Hello everyone, I have been working to resolve a fault code 33 (EGR) on my 91 2wd 2.3 vehicle. I get the following behavior on an intermittent basis; check engine light on/off (at speed and idle), idle gets rough, rpms drop to near stall then surges, I have;
  • New Plug wires
  • Replaced the EGR valve
  • Inspected cleaned the IAC & MAF
Advice as to where to look next would be appreciated!

I had a similar problem, was getting a poor idle and some hesitation as well as a engine code for a EGR problem. I found the fix elsewhere on this site as this is a somewhat common 2.3 issue. You may find the better explanation if you search. "2.3L EGR code" or "EGR cannister"

On my 97 2.3L If you stand at the front bumper with the hood open just to the left of the battery and lower than the battery you will see a canister with several rubber lines running to it. My fix was I had a bad rubber hose (split) and simply got a new one. I believe I may have also replaced the small cylinder just aft of the canister that one of the rubber hoses comes from before attaching to the cannister but I dont remember. I remember the hose has different size openings on each end so I may have had to buy that part to get the right hose but it was like 15$ altogether. Your problem I'm pretty sure lies within something in this system. Take a good look around.

Clear as mud???

so, it could either be te EGR or the canister purge solinoid. Is this code in the constant memory, or when doing the KOER test?

For me and others replacing the canister purge solonoid fixed the problem.

He stated he has already replaced the EGR which isnt the problem even though the error code leads you to believe it is.

Hey guys, KOEO this code is in second set of results or "continuos" memory. I will inspect/test (if I can) the canister, vacumn lines and solenoid and let you know what I find.

Sorry I dont remember the codes that mine came up with.

Since its so in expensive and such a common issue I would start by changing the cannister purge solonoid and clearing the code and see if that fixes it. It should keep the engine light out and begin to run better as the computer learns the problem is eliminated.

I would also change the fuel filter. I thought I changed mine often enough (every 18 months) but I recently changed it again it runs a ton better now. I'll be changing it at least yearly now, if not more.

On my 92 the "EGR control valve" the white thing on top of the EGR valve fixed code 33.

I'm not sure if the 91's are the same.

Vacumn equip (lines, hoses, etc.) check good. Do not see a cannister purge solenoid (does an EFI rig have one and where is it?) I do see an EGR solenoid for vacumn to EGR valve, perhaps this is the problem device...

the canister purge solinoid is in line between the intake manafold and the canister. It opens to alow gasses to be sucked into the manafold and burned off in the combustion chamber. code 33 is for both the solinoid and the egr. If i remember right, codes stored in continues memory will stay there untill the problem is resolved. Its been a while since i delt with automotive stuff tho

Success

Success for this issue came with replacement of the EGR Vacumn Regulator (located to the rear of the right front fender).
