My dad gave me his 1988 Ranger back in October. Its got the orginal 2.3 and 5spd. Well just recently the tranny locked up on me. I can get hold of another tranny thats the same but im wondering if I have any other options as to put a different 5spd in it to make a fast little street truck out of it?

Faster? By changing the transmission? It's a truck... A 4 cylinder truck at that... It's not really going to be fast... There's only one transmission that will bolt up anyway... If you want something fast, buy something fast... You'll be miles ahead already instead of dumping tons of money into something that will never be able to even be half what you could buy...

if it is a two wheel drive u can put a t-5 behind it and it will shift a little faster and it is stronger than a m5od. all 4 banger mustangs and t-bird turbo coupes had the t-5

5L and T5 swap.............. push rod rear suspension and m2 front end but you would have 15 grand into a $900 pick up and at the and of the day it still wouldn't hold the road aswell as a mustang.

If you want faster then you're looking in the wrong place. The transmission that came with your truck is just fine. The amount of acceleration that you get out of the thing by gearing it any differently will not really be felt at all. If you're looking for something simple and cost effective to make the truck faster then why not just fix the transmission and drop in a turbo?

I used tro work on T5's and I disagree that they are stronger...

Most of their internals are made of "sintered metal"
