fan clutch question

A typical Ford fan clutch is engaged for the first 30 seconds or so.
You've probably noticed it roaring until you go a short distance down the road. Normal.

Then, it uncouples and the roaring ceases because the fan is now free-wheeling more than it is being spun by the belt (but it's still spinning).

The way to tell is if it will spin by hand with the engine stopped. It won't continue to spin, but you can spin it and it feels dampened. If you can't spin it, the clutch is stuck engaged, which is what it is only SUPPOSED to do if the radiator gets real hot.

My truck was running hot in town before I changed my fan clutch. When I spun it by hand, it had some resistance.

thanks that gave me all the info i needed. did have some resistance so im going to replace it this week.

mine stayed on all the time which killed my already under powered truck i put a eletric fan on it and it freed up alot of power and it runs cooler

Some resistance in normal.

Must be a pretty wicked electric fan to outcool the factory fan.
