my little brothers 1990 stx has an oil cooler on it that comes out of the oil filter housing and up to the cooler behind the grille, then back down the the filter housing. it is leaking pretty bad and i need to fix it. my question is was this a factory option or maybe an aftermarket add on? i dont think it is really necessary and would like to delete is since he doesnt do any towing with it and it just seems like an unecessary headache. my plan is to either make a hydraulic hose at work that would just loop the oil out of and then back into the engine, or go to the junk yard and pull a housing off from a motor that doesnt have the cooler, eliminating the hose holes all together. any input is appreciated.

Prolly a add on after the fact.

once upon a time there was a article in the tech library about doing such a thing....basically its a filter housing from a 4 cyl turbo engine that came with this factory option... all you did was swap out the filter mount housing and ran the plumbing,

the idea is to keep the oil as cool as possible even if one isn't pulling any thing or working the engine hard. cool oil tends to equal better protection.

if you don't like it just swap out the mount from a J/Y

ok, thats what i was thinking because both of the 2.9ls i owned didnt have oil coolers on them. i have a friend with a spare 2.9l in his yard so i may just take a peek at the oil filter mount. thanks

The cooler on a 2.3 turbo didn't work that way, it had a cooler that was inserted between the filter and the filter mount that circulated engine coolant through it (in line with the heater core) that cooled the oil.
