F250 vs F150 D44 TTB

Aside from the F250 being leaf sprung and the F150 being coil sprung are there any major differences from the knuckles in? I'm looking into building a cheap wheeling rig now that I have a good DD/towrig. I've got a 93 F150 as a starting platform. I blew out the auto hubs on stock 235/75/15's and figure I can pick up some F250 D44 beam and possibly D50 parts for cheaper than manual hubs alone. I'm also thinking that F250's will be geared a little better 4.10's vs my 3.55's.

Aside from being 8 lug a HD 44 isn't any stronger than it's 5 lug couterpart. Even worse in that case the leaf sprung HD 44 uses completely different beams that aren't coil compatible (same for the D50TTB). What you want to look into is making your D44 into a D44/50 hybrid. The 50 uses D60 outer stubs and hubs. That will make your weak link the 3rd member of the D44.

The D50 beams are the same as the D44HD beams.

The D50 pig will bolt to a D44 beam.

The D50 side gears have the same spline count as the D44 shafts.

No on the knuckles but....

So, the outer shaft has a D60 spline count, but it has an ear that takes a D44/35 joint?

I'm only asking these questions because I have a crazy idea in mind...

The Joint on the D50 is the same size and style as the D60 The D44 HD uses the same D44/D35 joint.

The down side of the D50 is the neck down when it goes into the Diff. The spline there is the same as a D44.

Easy to make a D44/D50 hybrid. Use a regular D44 beam and axle ends. Swap in the D50 center section and keep the D50 center joint as it will adapt to the D44 axle shafts.

The D44 knuckles are different than the D44HD so doing a knuckle swap will be more involved due to the shear size of the D50 axle shaft joints.

I thought it over before, I know what your crazy idea was because I thought of it already; make a D35/50 hybrid. The D50 shaft uses D60 size u-joints it just necks down at the pig to a D44 size spline.

TTB D50 joints are not the same as D60 joints, they are between the size of D60 joints and D44 joints, and use external clips.

True, there are more lockers available for the D44, although the ARB is among the few available for the D50 (I believe the Lockright may also be available too).

I'll have to try the full D50/44 hybrid in the future, but for now, the D44 HD and F150 centersections are the same? This will make for a quick and simple gear swap if I can just swap the whole center.

Yes they are the same. The D44 HD and D50 beams are the same as they are set up for leaf springs.

The D44HD is just an 8 lug rotor/hub beam difference to the coil D44
