F250 Fuel Mileage

I'm looking at a 2001 F250 7.3L. It's got a decent lift in it, nothing huge, magnaflow exhaust, and new BFG All-Terrain tires. It is a crew cab short bed with 98,000 miles on it and its 4wd automatic. I'm just curious what kind of fuel mileage they tend to get. This is a one of a kind truck for me, exactly what I want. I'm just curious whether or not if it gets better fuel mileage than my truck, and the higher price of diesel would make it about even to what I get in my truck. My truck tends to get 16 mpg. Its an 02 Ranger, 2wd 3.0L.

my girlfriend has a 92 crewcab same motor and trans 4x4, i think hers gets @ 18-20 maybe a little more, she never fills it all the way up as it's not a DD. fuel milage depends on alot of things, tire size how heavy your foot and do you do alot of 'rabbit' starts, how well the motor is tuned and on diesels, whether it has been chipped or not and what kind of exaust. i know on diesels they like alot of room to breath, bigger is definately better in my opinion. as far as tuner chips, i've never run one but have heard some good things but i don't know what mfg to steer you to. the other thing i would reccomend is that if it has the auto hubs, switch 'em out to manual, the auto's are junk, excessive brake heat may cause premature failure of the auto lock in the hub causing them to try to engage on their own. the hubs aren't too bad depending on what brand you get and on some models you may or may not need a conversion kit, i got lucky when i had hers done, it didn't need the kit. as to what's involved in the switch, i'm not sure, i had a shop do mine, it was like $300 plus or minus a couple bucks, that was hubs and labor to install. i'm kinda surprised your 3.0 isn't seeing over 20mpg

I get 18 mix highway city. but mine is 2wd and I drive it like a grandpa. you sould check out ford-trucks.com that have a great forum for the superduitys.

It's not the same motor... You could expect 14-20 empty depending on what you're doing.

Ive had a 2000 and a 2002 7.3's auto's crew cab short bed's on 35's w/3.73 gears

14-18 on avg mixed driving in a area wiht lots of steep hills or and long grades

on long runs 300 miles plus, 17-20 depending on speed,65 got me 20, 75-80 got me 17

towing a f150 with gear for a wekend and 4 people on 250 mile runs at 60 with alot of long grades 14-16

on stock tune

on the 2000 I had a excalibur 4inch exuast and a intake on tow, I could get a extra mile or 2 out of it towing, around town put it on 2, if I could get my foot out of it I could pick up a extra mile,or lose 2 if I was in a whisling mood.


2000 had 70,000 on it when I got it, and got stolen at 120,000

02, had 50,000 on it when I got it, and just under 60,000 on it when it got stolen.

one thing I found is fuel quality made a diffence in millage and power as well.

cause there was more than once I was down to 12-14mpg and gutless till I got better fuel in the tank.


do some reading on some of the diesel boards before you buy.

well, i hate to 'burst' your bubble, but unless there is any significant changes in the 7.3L from 12/92 thru 2001 then yes i do have the same motor, the only thing the OP didn't specify was whether the tranny in the one he looked at was auto w/overdrive, which by the way mine is,

My buddy has a '97 with the 7.3 and an overdrive auto trans. It has no mods and gets 12-14. He really only uses it for towing stuff though.

92 is IDI, 01 isn't, 01 is turboed, 92 isn't, 01 uses HEUI injection, 92 doesn't, ect, ect.

The fact that you're only getting 16 on your little Ranger should stand out here. (I get 20 from my '89 BII w/ 2.9 and 29.5" tires.)

Since you're probably not going to change your driving style, you'll probably not get great mileage from the bigger truck.
