hows it going ? im new ...i have a 87 2.3l gas ranger that im haven trouble passen smog . i think i fixed the evap part . they said the timing was of so i set the timing to 1000 and installed a tac and ujusted the trotel down to 900rpms and put a new egr solidnod in but it still idles ruff after warm up.:annoyed:

set the timing to 1000?

it looks like you said you set the timing to 1000.... he was asking what you meant. seems like you might have idle speed confused with timing.

Timing has to do with the ignition system. you'll need a timing light to check it. You pull the SPOUT connector and you'll be able to set the base timing by loosening the distributor and rotating it until the timing light shows 10* BTDC. Or when the light is flashing on the 10* BTDC mark on the crank shaft pulley.

Besides the timing is it throwing any codes? Did it pass smog besides the timing failure, or were there other problems?

yes, that's exactly what i meant, i was confused...

what all is involved in your smog tests? back home they check idle NOx, HC and CO readings at 60km/h (35? mph) and HC and CO @ idle, aswell as gas cap pressure and presence of a cat

for the driving test, they essentially put the vehicle on a dyno

hay im back . i did all that i set the timing with my light at 10*btdc . it failed the EVAP test where they pressurized the fuel tank and the gas cap. i removed the bed of the truck and replaced the tank valve and gasket and put a new filler hose on .it still failed the evap test .some times it idels purfectat 1000rpms . and then all the sudden it will drop to 450-550 rpms . the fuel pump is ran off a switch i put in could have any effect.

ok, here's what i need you to do, i need you to take what you just wrote, and re-write it with some semblance of where the punctuation should be... it's nearly impossible to figure out where one thought ends, and the next begins...

not trying to be a dick, i'm just not following that...

The switch probably doesn't have anything to do with it, just check all the fuel lines and return lines. make sure everything is connected correctly and not cracking or splitting. Also make sure you've got the seal on the pump correct and locked into place.
