extractor sockets (camber pinch bolt)

I searched the topic on a number of discussions didn't really the answer. The left side pinch bolt head is rounded right side came loose w/o difficulty.

Before we start cutting & drilling was wondering if the hanson type extractor socket would work on the recessed head??

I have not had great luck with those.

The pinch bolts on mine are just 15mm hex heads. I'd use a turbo socket, which can work on torx and allen type heads too, they just grab onto the rounded shoulder at the edge.

I have the 12 point recessed checked the other with a drill.. at least they aren't hardened bolts. The new ballpoints come with new bolts so.. getting one out is the only problem... so far. the turbo sockets the same as the hanson type so.. guess I'm going shopping again LOL Thanks adsm!

Ive had success with rusty rounded out 15mm exhaust bolts by forcing a 9/16" 12 point socket on and putting lots of pb blaster on the threads. If that doesnt work try a 6 point but i dont believe you can get a 6 point to fit.. 9/16 is a bit larger than 14 and a bit smaller than 15... Perfect size lol

good reports. one was about a 12mm bolt rounded off. so guess that is what I need.

Sometimes.. WOW just can't describe the feeling.. I actually couldn't wait for my Friend Hank. went out there..

Smack on...I mean really drive that thing onto the head.

was soaking... My AFIB started... grabbed the handle... OMG i'm going to have a heart attack over this stupid bolt!
Pull....socket starts to angle off..... more hammering... pull again...starts cranking out!

it's out! my little heart is pounding in my throat. (thinking about how much all this would cost me at garage... more afib)

Best $20 I ever spent! I can't even guess how much aggravation this saved me!

Heck yeah awesome set man i might have to pick me up one! I thought you were working on an ifs ranger... 7/16" may of worked but by the sound of how hard it was with a proper tool it probably wouldnt have lol.

what's ifs?

13 was too big, 12 fit but spun. 11 driven on would still spin and 1/2 would even go on.
it's a 93 with a dana 35


These bolt heads may work when new and clean but after 20 some years.. the head was bad.. or bad from a previous owner.

IFS= Independent Front Suspension.

In cases like this, a little heat goes a long way, soak it real good with the PB blaster, then after it sits for a while put a propane torch to it and get it good an warm, the metal expanding from heating can be enough to help it come free. I have even got it hot, then hosed down the bolt itself, not what it goes into with PB blaster, the sudden cooling will help it break free.

Either way its a crap shoot, and you are lucky it worked out good for you. I am not always that lucky.

And drilling a bolt out never goes well either. I always wind up a touch off center or at the wrong angle or both.

Its little things like this that keep me from being a full time Tech, well that and I am not smart enough.

Yes, on my other cars we used to heat exhaust bolts on the flanges quite often.

I've not seen "Kroil" on the shelf at the big box stores.. I think one of my hvac suppliers has it. Although, PB blaster seems to actually work

Trouble with drilling.. is the bits.. I don't think the average person can even buy bits in big box and auto stores that really cut like the ones jobbers and industrial suppliers sell.

I went back and took the bolt out of the Irwin socket I.. there was no "points" at all... l. just a nearly perfect round.

Ahh yes, I went through a similar issue with the D-35 I put in my choptop. One side I managed to get out (mine were Allen keyed bolts), the other side despite penetrating oil and heat, I snapped it. Thought about it awhile, then drilled it out, flattened the backside some, and used a longer bolt with a nut and locktite.

Dry Ice

Have you ever heated a bolt and the surrounding area with a torch and then slapped dry ice to the head of the bolt? Sometimes you can hear the metal contracting. Make sure and have a heavy oven mitt when you try it.

Ive read something about atf and rubbing alcohol? Maybe it was another chemical but it was atf and something and people have had great success.

Ive had good success with welding a nut to the end of a snapped off bolt if theres room to get good penetration
